Estimating Ground Up

I have been remodeling interiors for 12 years. I want to start adding roofing/siding to our business. What is the best way to learn to guesstimate roofs from the ground. (I know its best to get up there). I know many roofers estimate from the sidewalk not even walking around (they also tend to build in a hefty fudge factor)
First year, I am after strictly basic shingle roofs ie. bread and butter. I would use independent roofers. I would work with them and have them go up on the roof with me prior to signing the contract with the homeowner. After I build that relationship I would prefer to bring them in only after its sold. I want to learn the roofing business from a project management side. Once things take off I could hire an experienced Roofer to oversee the installs. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Estimating Ground Up

Still here, just didn't seem to get too much on this thread. So I went directly to the shingles manufacturers to speak with the reps & find a way to do this.

Re: Estimating Ground Up

Actually I was asking for training/certification classes. Only 2 actually have something. I have left messages for some of the regional reps. Hopefully they can put me in touch with an independent. Will see from there.
