Epdm Coatings

looking for a coating that will work well to encapsulate epdm from acid rain in order protect existing copper edge metal, drains, scuppers and leaders from deterioration from the run off (it burns the copper)

Re: Epdm Coatings

LOL, Craziest thing i have heard in a while. If you coat the EPDM you make it very hard if not impossible to repair or do maintenence on it.

Re: Epdm Coatings

Aurel UT3300 creamy white urethane top coat elastomeric membrane.

Install it as a fully reinforced system with polyester membrane saturated in bonding resin and get a 12 year manufacturer's labor and material warranty. Flash the details with butyle tape or "triple course" them using Adurel Urethane mastic reinforced with polyester mesh.

This is not a roof coatingbut is a complete built up elsatomeric roof system. I'd never do just a coating except for UV purposes.

Re: Epdm Coatings

why not just coat the metal work? we have used GAF Topcoat for that, it has a nice patina green color. The EPDM would not benifit from a coating and would make it hard to repair the right way.

WIsh I had thought of that. Could do the trick. Hard to say since something in the adhesive could be doing the reaction.

I've been thinking about this and I'm not sure if the metal is being, or had been eaten where it can't be seen? A couple I went to do repairs on had no metal in existance under the EPDM. Virtually every trace of copper had been disolved.

Re: Epdm Coatings

Lead coated copper is great but looks dull to most people who want the look of real copper. Most people get copper for the look, not for the longevity. Which is also why coating the copper would be a sin, if it were visible.

Re: Epdm Coatings

Well, another option is a heavy gauge like 20 oz. copper.

Re: Epdm Coatings

I like the coating of the metal idea, but you need special primers on copper when using an acrylic.

Re: Epdm Coatings

firestone said to coat the copper edges, the elastomer/acrylic coating has VOC`S that would damage the edges w/out prior coating-I`m considering coating the edges w/fibered clear GEOCELL 2315,AND THEN COATING THE WHOLE THING W/FIRESTONE`S ACRYLI-TOP SYSTEM(PREWASH,BASE COAT ,AND ACRYLI-TOP WHITE)brings it up to energy star rating and will make the house much cooler,I`m currently doing LLC standing seam on another roof there and have already coated the burnt copper yankee gutter, matches the LLC now-thanks for all the advice guys, aaron i think that clear compound of Tom`s would be really good for this????

Re: Epdm Coatings

Haven't tried it myself, but have heard from others in the biz that coating fresh clean copper with shellac will keep the shiny look for a long time, but it will eventually wear off and the patina color will take over, but by then, I would think it would be protected from any acid rain ugliness
