Elasomeric Help

I have a customer that just put an addition on his sante fe style low pitch epdm roof. The old roof was painted to match his stucco. He wants me to paint the new roof to match and recoat the whole roof. I am thinking elastomeric with a primer on the new stuff. Advice would be appreciated. I am a painter by the way not a roofer. This guy is a freind and a customer and I want to do him right. Thanks, MOPAINT

Re: Elasomeric Help

I can't help you out on what to use because the only times i ever painted epdm was white "hop-a-long" stuff, can't even remember the propper name of it.
I will say that rubber is not compatible with oil, oil based materials will shribble the epdm up and eventually rot it out.

Found this on Google: Rubber Roof Coatings

Re: Elasomeric Help

If you are trying to fix the roof there are many manufacturers who have specific EPDM Rehab systems and you should probably let a roofer do it. If you are just painting it just about any acryllic will work.

BTW it is "Hypalon" LOL!

Re: Elasomeric Help

Thanks Re- con. Yes It's just a paint job, I just want something compatable. I'm not trying to be a roofer. I found something at Ames Research .com looks like what I need. I have used there products on decks. Mike

Re: Elasomeric Help

Volatile Free has an EPDM conditioner that will bind the surface of the rubber which will eliminate the molecular disbondment of the surface. This will greatly aid in the adhesion of the acrylic.

I would be sure to use a solvent based acrylic for this if you expect it to last. If there is any ponding water, acrylic will fail.

Re: Elasomeric Help

Couple things... are you painting for color or for water tightness. Buying the junk off the shelf at home depot and painting it on probably wont last very long.

if you want to install the elastomerics as an actual roofing system there are a number of ways of doing this. First is to wash the existing surfaces, you are probably going to want to use a manufacturer recomended cleaner/soap. Then patching all penetrations with elastomeric mastic, of matching formula to your base and top coat so there are no incompatibilities. Your going to need a base coat if you want it to last and if the epdm is not fully adhered you will probably want to fully reinforce the base coat using a polyester mat. If I were to do this I'd be about 5 gallons per square combined over 3-4 various coats.

Best bet if you are trying to install an elastomeric ROOF, is to call a roofer skilled with elastomerics. If you're just painting it any acrylic elastomric should bond, I'm guessing. The deciding question here is who is your buddy going to call when it leaks?

Re: Elasomeric Help

Thanks Grumpy, It's a new roof tied in to an exsisting roof that was painted. This was a room addition. This part of the roof is visable from upstairs windows so that's why we need to make it match. Everything is in good condition we just want to color it the same. The roofer is too busy to do it and I could use the job. We live in the desert so not much up a leak problem anyway. Mike

Use the EPDM conditioner for your own good.

Re: Elasomeric Help

Firestone makes a product called acrilitop just for this. It can be colored at the paint store to any color you need. Id use there product called preclean prior to painting.
