Do You Guys?

When you guys bid a new asphalt shingle roof do you bid to cap off the ridges with the nice looking ridge shingles most manufacturers offer or do you just blow those off and use regular shingles over the ridge or ridges.

Oh one final question does ice and water shield go on before or after the black paper. I can't think of the name of that black paper it currently escapes me

Re: Do You Guys?

I use Landmark shingles with the precut ridge cap faster less mess and looks nicer with the little 45 on each edge. Ice barrier goes on first. I've been thinking though on valley and roof lines what if you felted then came back and cut 12" of felt off then ice barrier so that it sticks to the sheathing then to the paper so water can't over the I&W and under the felt. Does this make sense? I do not do it this way but have been thinking.

I cut mine but I only do the occasional shed for friends. I'm really too old to do roofing (have to take a lot of 'bad back' breaks). I still keep my jig for cutting them.

Re: Do You Guys?

Using 3 tab shingles for Dim shingle hip and ridge is a sign of poor quality and craftsmanship. No they do not match like the premade cap does from the mauf.

The homeowner may not notice but I do...and it doesnt say much about your quality.

I use Z ridge for the most part on all hips and ridges with no ridge vent. It just looks so much nicer

I price it both ways and let the customer decide.

That's about all you can do with ceertain customers since most want bottom line pricing and that extra for factory ridge is enough to lose the deal most of the time.

There are only a few colors that I consider it, black which is pretty standard either way depending on manufacturer and certain colors of brown. If there is no way a 3 tab will match so it blends in then I'll just get the higher priced dimensional ridge on my dime so it looks nice when we're done. But if you pick your colors, 9 out of 10 times nobody notices, and so long as it does it's job and blends in, I'm not going to lose sleep over it either.

Re: Do You Guys?

Is the z ridge any different than their seal a ridge? I know that the seal a ridge is not too bad per bundle. I think I pay $13 something a bundle for their regular dimensional shingle, and around 16 something for the seal a ridge bundle

Re: Do You Guys?

Z Ridge, ish, I'll pass, no thanks. Is it still 8 or 10 inches?? LOL!!! I put some Elk laminates on the other day for my really really cheap brother in law and they were horrible. Made me realize I'm spoiled with Landmarks but then again there not a big box shingle brand either. Reserved for pro's who know what there doing, Certainteed that is.

Although Landmarks are my favorite to lay I do like the Timbertex ridge over the Accesory ridge due to being much thicker.

Bid a tear off today with 10 year old Timberlines and they looked like they were 20 years old, luckily the American Family adjuster found enough hail to total out the roof.

I think all manufacturers should offer a ridge shingle compatible with all colors that are loaded with zinc or copper to prevent moss and algea formations. This would elimate the need for zinc strips and technicaly eliminate the need for "AR" shingles.

Sorry for you Elk guys for ranting but in the past 10 years all five roofs I've laid with Elks (thank goodness the number is that low) have all been horrible. Compared to the 50+ homes I roof a year with Landmarks shingles in the past three years there's been less than 5 roofs I didn't like with them and they were done in the winter with stuck together shingles.

Running as owner operator I get to see first hand what works and doesn't.

In the past year I have installed close to 200 roofs using Certainteed products. From my stand point really the only reason I have noticed to use them was for there incentives. I have some serious complaints for there oil stains. that they claims is made by 3M and that will go away in a few thunderstorms. which is incorrect aswell crappy product.
I'll still stick with my high definition Elk products and to list my price on Z ridge which isnt cheap its $24 a bundle (32-34lf) but well worth it i dont do spec house or crap work thou

Re: Do You Guys?

To be perfectly honest, I feel that if the price difference between the 3 tabs or any manufacturers hip & ridge product is enough to make or break you on a job, you are probably bidding too low. Id hate to see what happened if you had to buy an extra roll of $12 felt

Re: Do You Guys?

I only sell Landmark 30's and better on tear offs. Sealdons which are no longer made are junk, and the XT line of three tabs to me are better than Sealdons but still not that good. New Horizons are nice looking shingles but aren't as good as Landmarks. The Super Shangles are top notch shingles but are pretty spendy. Dollar for dollar the Landmark TL is a great shingle.

I pay $27 a bundle for Certainteed Accesories, 30ft a bundle.

On some jobs I double the ridge. My lunmber yard only stocks Certainteed products but can get any brand.

You must do 4 roofs a week on average all year long? Guessing you have a rather large crew to acheive that?

Re: Do You Guys?

it was the certainteed 30yr AR (paper bag wrapping)
worked a neighboring storm. and yes 3 crews of 7

quote from my rep was "that the oil staining was caused by this 3M producted they use and that it would wash off in a few rains."

In 2 months time the stain is still there, but no one complains so I kept my mouth shut.
