Cutting Birds Mouth

Hey I am building a barn and I am trying to figure out how to cut my bird mouths. I need one at both ends of my raffters, I am just using ruff cut 2x8 for raffters and and 3 laminated ruff cut 2x8s for beams. The top beam will be at 16' and the bottem at 10' the run is 12 and the rize is 6'. So when I go to step off my birds mouth do I use 6" and 12" on my square?

Yes. When the pitch is set or known, all cuts are the same.

Re: Cutting Birds Mouth

Don't reccomend birds mouth on both ends of any rafter. With a 2x8 you want a good 4 inches height-above-plate (HAP) for your cuts. The other end will have your common pitch cut. Don't forget to factor in you ridge thickness for your rafter measurements.
