Re: Cleaning A Cooper Roof ???

That patina protects the copper beneath, I would not recommend cleaning it. If you clean the oxidation off the top there is a possibility it will become pitted, particularly from acid rain.

Re: Cleaning A Cooper Roof ???

I've used clear coatings specificaly for metals that come in spraypaint cans to coat copper for inside applications. Not sure about exterior. Need some painters to chime in here.

Re: Cleaning A Cooper Roof ???

Okay guys, you are all INCORRECT. Urine will actually accelerate the patina process!!!

Niece was bringing her annoying dachshund to the shop for a while. The little **** pee'd all around a coil of copper I had on the floor, most beautiful turquoise patina I'd ever seen overnight..but only on the bottom four inches of the coil.

Muratic acid will also clean it but you will still be left with a dull brown finish on parts of it. As stated above odds are it will be pitted and rough. You can clean it and coat it with a polyurethane clearcoat. Don't know how long this will keep the weather out though.

Re: Cleaning A Cooper Roof ???

If you clean Copper at the point of Oxidization, you DO pull off a layer of Copper and thusly clean it, It is when the Oxidization process ceases and sets as "rust" that the discoloration begins.

Piss and scrub will work. Piss and wait makes for beautiful art!

Re: Cleaning A Cooper Roof ???

good point malco.

Rewster, the problem with trying to clean the patina off is, unless you get some type of abrasive and a polisher you are not going to have that "new copper" shine when you are done. If one did use an abrasive and polisher, depending on how thick the sheet and how deep the patina, you could actually polish holes in your roof.

If you want new copper shine, you need, well, new copper. It can be installed with a clearcoat to delay the patina process but I don't know how long that lasts. In metal roofing we have a painted color called "copper penny". It is a paint so it never patinas. Personally, I think it looks cheesy.

Taking the patina off your copper roof is similar to grinding the rust out of that old chevy.

Looks Great...For a bit!!!! But fuzzes the unit in the long run. Rust does NOT rust! Exposed metals do!

The copper patina IS rust! Cupric Oxide.

I'd Google 'restoring copper roofs' and see what pops up. Tarn-X looks good on TV! Then you just have to seal it real fast.
