Clay Tile Roofing

I'm from the painting forum and have a question on the clay tile roofing that looks like clay piping they used years ago. I believe they are a common material in the south on primarily up scale homes. My question is can this type of roofing material be walked for the purpose of painting the exterior of the house? If this can be walked on where is it best to step? On the top of the curve or at the low stop of the curve? Thanks Robert

Re: Clay Tile Roofing

I would avoid walking on any tile roofs as you could break a tile at any time. Much of this would depend on your size and the age of the roof. Old barrel tiles are the worst. The new ones are machine made, consistant in size, contact area and (here) set in a polyurethane adhesive. I still stay off of them if at all possible.

Re: Clay Tile Roofing

spanish roofing tile will probably break

same with older slate
slate is a little easier to replace, if you can get hands on particular slate

can I ask why you want to walk on roof to paint
ladder?
boom lift?

Yes,they can be walked on.As stated above they are fragile and one wrong step can buy you a lot of headaches.
Not sure how soon you need to access this roof, but if you hop over to www.cleaningtalk.com and seek out a guy named Don Phelps(he is on vacation until Sat or Sun) he may be able to offer some advice. He does a lot of tile roof cleaning and is very familiar with the approach to walking tile.

Re: Clay Tile Roofing

just rent a boom lift

no need to worry about replacing roofing

your painting right, not roofing

rent the boom, and pay attention when the guy shows you how to swing it. Dont crash into anything. be ginger on the controls

Re: Clay Tile Roofing

A lot depends on your size and the condition of the roof. I run from 180 -190#, wear soft shoes and manage to pop at least one everytime I'm up there. If you only weigh 145, you'd stand a better chance of getting away with it.

Re: Clay Tile Roofing

up here in good old A2, there's only a half dozen tile roofs in town so I have no input. But I will say that it seems to me there would be plenty of houses where a boom would only give you limited access to what needed to be painted.

Re: Clay Tile Roofing

Yes, I could rent a lift but what do you do when the tile meets the area I have to paint. Imagine a clay tile shed roof and at the top of the shed roof the exterior stucco needs to be painted. A boom lift will not allow me to get low eough to paint along the tile roofing will it? Thanks

You'll need to buy or rent a hook ladder.

Also, get a working relationship with a good tile, specialty roofer.
