Cedar Shakes
Haven't put these down in a while, looking for how much longer they take to put down than your standard arch. (not counting sheathing under the arch.) Is there an appropriate air tool for this? Would that even speed it up much? These are 3/4" split shakes, not sawn shingles.
This is a fairly simple roof: 2 valleys, 16' wall flashing, maybe 10 feet of step, power mast, 2 stacks. My thought is to make it so expensive that he doesn't want to replace the shakes, then if he still wants them I can do it carefully and still make a buck.

"Is he wanting Copper valleys?"
What difference will that make to how long it takes?

Re: Cedar Shakes
Any input anyone? Someone must still put these things down. How much longer do they take you?

Re: Cedar Shakes
Sorry,
I thought you would have gotten answers from a regular shaker by now too. I don't do much of it, but hand nailing on a walk on pitch for me, and I am slow, is about 1/2 square per hour and a 2" thin crown stapler is about 1 square per hour. I think it is 6d or 8 d hand nails, but you can get really good coverage and alternative coverage ideas from the cedar shingle and shake beareau. I'll add a link upon an edit if I see you still need it later on tonight, but if you Google that agency, they will be near or at the top. Prices? I used to be at $ 150.00 per square plus materials and mark-up years ago for shakes and 1 1/2 times that for cedar shingle for a walk on pitch and then up $ 25.00 per square per inch on shake and 1 1/2 times that much on cedar shingles. Here is the link: http://www.cedarbureau.org/ Ed Last edited by Ed the Roofer; 06-05-2007 at 10:10 PM. |

Re: Cedar Shakes
Thanks Ed, I knew you'd come through for me.
The price keeps going up, so hopefully he'll go for arch's.

Re: Cedar Shakes
siding cedar shingles i usually charge about $350 sq. 6" reveal. labor only. roofing i imagine would be a little more. all the cedar roofs i've done have been t&m. shake should pobably be about the same.
as for air gun. i like to use my makita siding nailer. shoots a splitless siding nail. or for shakes a 1/2" crown stapler would work well too. |

Re: Cedar Shakes
Well its about 3 times the installed cost of timberlines. we do a lot of both. We love cedar roofs do a lot of 18"perfections and a lot of premium grade tapersawn shake. in the northeast we go 5 in a half reveal for a three ply roof with stainless nails over cedar breather. most are western red cedar or Alaskan yellow cedar always cedar bureau approved stock. we can offer a warranty from the cedar bureau as an aproved installer. Dont shy away from it its a good niche.

Re: Cedar Shakes
Appreciate the responses as always, just didn't want to 'bit' off more than I could chew. I know I can do the install, just couldn't remember how much longer it took to lay. Three times, huh? Guess I'll look forward to a nice simple re & re.
Tks again, guys, if you make it out to the wet coast don't forget to stop in for a wet one. Rich.
