Cedar Conversion

I'm doing a cedar to asphalt conversion on a house in a block where almost every house has cedar shingles. Its a bummer for style, but the owner can't afford new shakes.

The rafter construction is 24" centers. Is it better to strip the strapping and then sheath, or sheath on top of the strapping? I can't see it being a strength problem, but perhaps there's something I don't see here. I'm concerned about the extra weight.

Time-wise this would be sweet. It takes a while to strip those boards. Plus they're a space hog in the bin.

Cheers,
grant

Re: Cedar Conversion

What are you referring to as strapping? Probably what we call "battens" here. If so, I see no way you can do the roof without stripping the strapping. I see your trade is carpentry, but I thought everyone knows you need a flat surface to install asphalt shingles. We must be talking about something different.

24" OC doesn't scare me if the plywood is properly rated and the rafters properly sized.

Backing up after re-thinking your post, are you saying that you are goign to strip off cedar shingles and the roof is spaced decking? Where there are 1x6's spaced about 2" apart? If so we do these kinds of roofs all the time, infact they commonly have 3 layers of various asphalt products on top, usually 90LB mineral surface.

We've never had a problem shingling on these types of roof frames, just plywood over the spaced decking, and don't forget your ODE at the gables/rakes.

Re: Cedar Conversion

I sheet right over the skip sheeting... my thought is that after time, it's part of the structure, and to remove it takes away from the integrity of the building. Use 2 1/2" nails through the 1x into the rafters.

Re: Cedar Conversion

Do it all the time. I also re-nail the strapping with ring shanks prior to putting the sheathing on as I often find that the strapping is loose on the original nails.
