I feel line TNT here. You said they screwed their customers. I asked how paying according to their warranty literature is screwing the customer. Your opinion of their shingles isn't even about their shingles, it's about one defective line (that Owens Corning has had to otherwise they wouldn't have redone the sure nail) of shingles that failed after a few years of being installed.

I've personally never met my OC rep or much less talked to him more than once on the phone. On Tuesday of this past week I was over at my CT reps house eating lunch and talking roofing at the table.

All I want to know is how they "screwed" your customers?

Re: Best Brand Of Shingles, TODAY

We have used Landmarks for years. Even before I came to this site. I remember the members here disagreeing with me about their quality but have since changed to Landmark.

In other parts of the country, it appears that the quality is not the same. I have known Contractors on this site who I would trust 100% and they say that CT is garbage in their area. I have no reason to not believe them.
The bottom shingle in this area is Timberline. Contractors around here and especially stormers use them exclusively because of the pricing they can get with large volumes. That is "job security" in my mind. Many many roofs that will need replacing within 10 years.

The Malarkey's we have used are not very good at all, but have never used their highlanders yet.

All the others I would group together as a happy medium. Not a real big gripe about them and nothing special, aside from the larger size of the Iko and their others with a different name on them.

I tend to use Owens Corning the most with Certainteed second. We have used other brands when needing to save the customer some money without problems either.

For me it's what rep is easier to get a hold of and I have a good relationship with the OC rep.

Maybe the plant we get them from (shakopee) here is better?

Possibly. When there was a shortage (which has happened quite a few times), we got some from Ohio (I believe), and they were not as good. Still better than the GAF's we get around here, but sub-par to the usual ones from CT.

You answered your own question. If your rep and you have dinner regularly......I am sure you're not biased

Can you please answer the question?

Also, I installed more squares of durations in 2013 than landmarks.

BamBamm.....If you are correct, why did Certainteed have to be sued? Why not just replace the bad shingles? Because they would rather screw the customer.......

That's pretty standard procedure when their is a mass problem with a product and they did replace the shingles. I know I did over 30 of these roof replacements.

You should be more upset at Bird for closing down. GAF for having shingles with premature cracking after 3 years. OC shingles for holding and trapping moisture. They all have their problems.

We can end this conversation quickly if you just answered the question of "how exactly did Certainteed screw your customers after paying according to the warranty"?

Owens Corning
Certainteed
TAMKO
Malarkey

The last THREE GAF roofs I put on had warranty issues. Used to love them but until they make some changes I am a bit gun shy!

It's all just a matter of opinion. Every roofer has their own favorite install. most of the roofers around here are just out for a quick buck so they go for the cheaper material

Is IKO really that far in last place for you guys? I am a deck guy mostly, so I am reading this and taking public opinion pretty seriously. GAF is the shingle of choice in my area.

GAF is not to friendly to new contractors. I hear CT are great shingles, and are #2 around here. I though TAMKO were the cheap-o shingles... Ownes Corning I see in Lowes and have never handled them.

These Atlas shingles with Scotch Gaurd are the new thing showing up around here

However my list would go

Certainteed landmarks
Owens corning Durations
Malarkey Highlander
Tamko Heritage

The ct landmarks are in a class of their own and I am not going to install any thing other than Certainteed shingles this year.
I agree 100%

How many times do I have to answer your damn question......The answer is Certainteed made the customers sue them in order to get the warranty paid.

If CT knew the shingles were bad, why not just replace them instead of making a class action lawsuit replace them? Understand......now? Just seems chicken ****. If I sell you something and guarantee it.....would it be right of me to make you sue me to stand behind my warranty? Thats all.

Re: Best Brand Of Shingles, TODAY

Well you never answered how they screwed YOUR customers as you claim. Having a class action suit doesn't screw your customers, it makes it easier for them to get compensated as the manufacturer already admitted a fault.

I'm surprised you're an OC advocate knowing about their various lawsuits and shafting of customers. Luckily once they finally got into the organic mat shingle CT started having those problems so they quickly shut it down. Same thing with GAF class action law suits starting on the west coast, Atlas in the Midwest, IKO all over the world, etc.

I'll stick with a shingle (Landmark Fiberglass) that has had no major changes in over 20 years and you keep putting on what you have the most trust in however, try putting on a Landmark shingle before you continue to say they're terrible.

Insults when you don't have answers? Classy and I have proven my point.

Roofing has been in my family since the 1940s.

It's winter. I take off basically from middle of November until March. I'll do my home-show coming up in two weeks and run leads then.

During the season I usually let my employees / subs handle a lot of the work while I run a few appointments and basically keep an eye on things so no, I don't really work.

All my posts are done from my phone, I can't even get on the desktop site.

Don't worry, I know your type and I'm fine with it.

What I have found is that the Customer never knows what is in the warranty and what it covers.
Contractors around here? Rarely, if at all have a clue. They promote "Lifetime" coverage out of the package
Even w/ IKO

Re: Best Brand Of Shingles, TODAY

Bam Bam said: "Luckily once they finally got into the organic mat shingle CT started having those problems so they quickly shut it down."

Now I have a real problem with this. CT, at least in my area, rode that Organic Horse for way too long. And the very WORST thing they did, was promote not onlyFOR organics, but AGAINST fiberglass.

Their lies cost me a some business and made contractors who spoke the truth look crazy. I would many times recommend fiberglass in an Organic market....yes, I was the "Fool on the Hill". But when the manufacturers, suppliers and the local construction, roofing and building industry was in the publics face about Organics being superior, well, I did an about face and joined the Liars Club. I guess my stomach over ruled both my heart and my brain. One dumb hick town roofer ain't gonna fight city hall here.

And I say this as a CT Contractor. Wow..... Yeah, I must be crazy. LOL

Oh well. I still have fiberglass O/C Classics out there (20 + yrs) that have long outlasted any organics put on in that time period. And the whole time between 1990 to 1997 or so, all CT did was pound pound pound on the inferiority of fiberglass shingles in my area.......while their "great Shangles" failed

Still......

CT's contractor programs have made the difference for me. O/C and the others have played catch up with theirs.
Quite simply CT reached further out, did it better and provided more stuff.

Too bad they lied .........This disaster was very avoidable.
