Asphalt Shingles On Bow Window-Hip Caps??
I'm in the process of roofing (asphalt) a multiple hip roof over a bow window and have 5 hips converging at the peak, where they join an existing gable ridge. How do I finish the top with the hip caps. I expect the last 2-3 caps will start overlapping and will need to deal with this along with the last cap that ties in with the existing roof. Sorry if I'm not making this clear.

Man, - - that is a tough one.
Sure wasn't designed with the finish in mind. Can't say I really know the answer, - - but seems like the best you can do is 'butt-cut' them as they start running into each other, - - and as you get to the top layers, - - make them lap as many 'hips' as possible to keep the number of layers from piling up so sky-high. Come to think of it, - - I think when I got to within about say, - - 4 rows from the top, I'd 'lay-in' a flashing (system) 'over and above' (and across), - - then I could 'cheat' the layers above that without worrying about creating leaks. Maybe someone else knows better, - - that's the best I got . . . Last edited by Tom R; 08-14-2006 at 06:11 PM. |

Sounds like a job for Double R-D.
River Rat Dad will be along, I'm sure. I bet he's seen one or two of these critters in his time.

Run all hips up at the same time. As they meet at the top the three in the middle will "disappear" under the two on the outside. As the two on the outside cover them stop the middle ones at that point. it will make sense when you see all 5 come together....

Re: Asphalt Shingles On Bow Window-Hip Caps??
Lemme rephrase... you don't actually have to take all 5 up at the same time. Just stop 2 feet short of the top on each till all 5 are there. Then the middle linebacker should dissapear under the two outside linebackers when they get within 6" of each other. then the two outside linebackers will disappear under the cornerbacks when they get within 6". It will all make sense when you get there...

finish it off with a piece of copper or lead. lay it in dry first and make sure it looks good.
