Another Use For Shingle Vent II As A Wall Vent
Here is a modification of the Shingle Vent II Ridge Vent we applied about 7 years ago, to be used as a top of a mansard wall vent to alleviate the severe 2nd story internal heat issues this home owner was suffering from.
Additionally, we applied a "Green" roofing system, ie; the white Duro-Last single ply membrane on the top flat roof surface. Notice in the photos, that we only painted the membrane which overlapped onto our newly created fascia board, which lent rigidity to the top of the Shingle Vent II Ridge Vent, which we cut in half for this installation. This was several years before I knew about the Smart Vent product manufactured by DCI Products, Inc. I now look back and feel that the Smart Vent would have been much better suited for this solution, but we made do with what we could think of. Now lets see if I learned how to resize and upload the photos. Ed |

Looks good as long as the knee walls have air space. Good transition with the metal flashing too. Is that lower roof even have a pitch to it though?
How were the windows ever finished? |

I guess the last pics showed the pitch better.

I've never seen a shingle with that burnt colored edge on it either. Usually it's in the middle of the shingle, not the bottom edge.

Re: Another Use For Shingle Vent II As A Wall Vent
7 years ago when we did the job, the shingle used was an Owens Corning Oakridge 40 year shingle, which currently would be a 50 year warranty.
One year later, when I went to inspect the roof and take some follow up photos, the shingle were spider web cracking already. I don't know if that will permeate all of the way through, but I should go back and take some 7 year follow up photos just to find out. Ed |
