Question

Advantage-Lok Metal

I recently booked a job removing shingles and going back with this type metal roofing. Have any of you guys put this on before?

Re: Advantage-Lok Metal

I suspect two things.

One, Advantage - Lok is a standing seams panel, or Two, it is a new branding for inter-lock roofing of delta, bc

Am I correct?

Re: Advantage-Lok Metal

Overall it is a solid system.

Note: This is a standard snap-lock profile with nailing strip (no clips required) Adv.-Lok is just a branding gimmick. This profile is available from numerous suppliers as well as metal roofing companies with a roll-forming machine and sheet-metal shops.

Two things that i do not like: 26 gauge is really thin, and I'd recommend 24 ga. or better yet aluminum (but Alu. is expensive)

Second thing i do not like is the 'ribbing' in the center of the pan. The probably told you it is to avoid "oil-canning' - well, when you go with 16" wide panel, there should be no oil canning on a residential home as the runs are not really long enough. If you do go with ribbing, you will not be able to upgrade to a BI-PV Solar system from Uni-Solar. This of course is at your sole discretion, but if you are doing a metal roof, it is silly to pass on such a great product as uni-solar, which will pay for itself in 5-7 years or sooner, and give you free electricity thereafter.

PS, get breathable synthetic underlayment. I prefer GAF deck armor. DO NOT use felt. It is silly to go with expensive roof and save a couple of bucks on underlayment.

PS2, what do you pay per sq. ft. and where are u located? Didi you get other estimates?

Good luck.

One more thing,
Just noticed it comes with acrylic coating. Just a not that Kynar500/Hylar5000 is industry standard for metal roof coatings, while acrylic is like "second hand" el-cheapo....

Re: Advantage-Lok Metal

Perhaps we have a miscue?

I know it's a solid system or I wouldn't have sold it to begin with.

I sold the system because it is specificly what the customer wants. I normally install custom formed double locked standing seam of higher quality but this is what the customer insisted on regardless.

I'm interested in talking to someone that has actually installed this type metal. My questions have to do with the hemming that is done at the bottom, rakes, and in valleys.

Felt, 15lb, ... I intend on felting the roof in to keep it waterproof after the shingle tearoff. I figured I'd lay red rosin paper over the felt as we move along. ...

oh, ... and the panels have no 'ribbing' in the center.

The customer is very well heeled and could care less about uni-solar, whatever that is. He's more concerned with appearance and color.

Has anyone here actually installed this product?

Re: Advantage-Lok Metal

Yes, we did install this stuff. Just the one without the nail strip. We used clips instead. At the eave you cut the ribs, leaving like an inch pas the eave trim and just bend it down and lock the panel into the eave. Rakes depend on what rake trim you use... it is also easy... make sure your panels are at a square angle to the eave. (3-4-5 rule, you know...

Good luck

Hey Alan,

I installed that panel and found it very forgiving for application over a not so flat deck.A good whack with a 2x4 along the lock sets it into place.
Very minimal oil-caning.We just needed to shim a few low spots to get the panels to run on a true plane.
You just have to make sure to repaint any cut edges so they don't rust.

Haven't used that one. Never tried it because I prefer cleats. I can space cleats 1/8" off the panel easily for expansion/contraction.

I'm thinkin that's probably why the panels are only 16" wide.

I put some similar metal on a Pizza Hut a few years back but it had a cover that snapped down over the seams and the bottoms weren't hemmed.

Re: Advantage-Lok Metal

I looked at one a few months back. 16" with. As the sun hit them, they rasied about 2" off the roof in the middle.
