3/12 Pitch Help...

I dont do much roofing. but I need to do my dormer roof.. I have a 3/12 pitch.. can I use regular architectural shingles? or do I need a special roofing material? rubber? tar? rolled?

sorry if its a rookie question..
BTW, I live in rhode island.. winters can get rough.. and we have a decent amount of rain..

Re: 3/12 Pitch Help...

3 ON 12 IS ON THE BORDERLINE,you can use entire ice shield w/good ventilation,or install 30# like S.I.S.,Sorry a little more than double coverage w/the sucessive laps 17-18"apart-you`ll be ok w/30 yr architecturals,or 3-tabs-the 3-tabs will lay flatter

Re: 3/12 Pitch Help...

Why use architecturals on a roof that can't be seen such as a dormer? 3/12 is border line, I'd use modified bitumen for sure. Look into the self adhering kind so you don't burn down the house.

Re: 3/12 Pitch Help...

you get a longer warranty out of the shingle applications, and depending on the lay of the property you may see the roof,Iuse theself adhered sbs`s for 2 on 12 +less pitches
