20 Yr Plus Old Roof.

Hey guys,
was wondering, has anyone here ever re-roofed 'torn off' a 20 year old laminate shingle?

I have torn off 100's of 3-tabs and dozens of metal, slate, tile, etc.,
that have been on the roof 20 plus years, but never a laminate.
The oldest laminate/dimensional I have ever torn off was 16 years old 'failed roof'.

In my area the first laminate we used was GAF in 1983 'it's still on the home'
how long have laminates been around?

I've tore off quite a few in the 15-20 yr range. As far as I know they were all organic. All I know is they are at least twice as heavy. As far as how long they have been around, you said you put one on in '83,that must have been near the begining.

Yeah, the first I did was 83/84.
Twill says he thinks they have been around since the 70's, but he wasn't sure.

Re: 20 Yr Plus Old Roof.

I recall (hand nailing) roofing with the old sawtooth laminates of the seventies I didn't realize how thick it was till the homeowner decided they wanted a wood stove and I had to go back and cut through it for the triple wall chimney flange. Holy **** it was like a 1 1/4 inch thick ham sandwich!! I don't recall what brand it was but it was popular on the mansards of commercial buildings of that era. One thing I'm not looking forward to is tear offs with ice and water. Some of the earlier I&W without the granular surface the shingles weld themselves to from heat.

I did tear off some early organic timberlines that were shot. They broke off at the top of the exposure. Ive also torn off one of my early sentinel three tabs I did 20 some odd years before back when i worked for another contractor. kinda reminds you of how time flies and how old your getting.
