if you are asking for opinions on full coverage as opposed to just one perimeter coarse, i dont see how full coverage can hurt, i have done it on several jobs.

Re: 100% Ice & Watershield

I think it's ok my Uncle who's been roofing for over 25 years thinks it's bad.

My house and garage is 100% W&I. Got a 2.7/12 comming up that will be totally W&I'd.

What I do know is with some brands of I&W tearing off the shingles will be a real pain.

Your uncle's been roofing 25 years, he thinks it's bad. I've been roofing 25 yrs, I think it's bad....hmmmm
Are ya seeing a pattern here? Do we possibly know what we're talking about or are we just old and senile?

There are very very few instances where I agree with it.

BTW, this topic has been hashed and rehashed sooo many times on these forums...(sigh, I'll say it again) IF YOU ARE RELYING ON YOUR UNDERLAYMENT TO KEEP THE WEATHER OUT, YOU ARE DOING SOMETHING WRONG!!!

its no problem, but make sure there is a provision for good ventilation. We do a lot of work right on the Atlantic ocean and it is almost always spec for full conerage of I&W. Yes I have been roofing over 25 years.

Re: 100% Ice & Watershield

I have done several full i&w coverage on slate, wood shakes and tile,
not sure why you would use it on a shingle roof tho, other than on the occasional low slope section of roof here and there, because it will not increase the shingles life span and the life span of the shingles is much less than the i&w.
I don't see anyway it would harm a shingle roof, but it's surely a waste of the home owners hard earned monies.

Re: 100% Ice & Watershield

My Dad has been roofing for a measly 36 years and he things ice and water on the whole roof is ok.

My Uncle said it was bad because the shingles stick to it.

Here in MN we have to put at least two rows of ice and water on heating buildings.

I monitored a roof that was 100% GIWS go through hurricanes Frances and Jeanne with 'son of Ivan' in between. It made it through all prior to the final roofing (metal).

Re: 100% Ice & Watershield

I've never said I think there is anything wrong with it, I said it is completely unnecessary.

Way too many roofers nowadays use it as their magic bullet substitute to replace quality roofing.

I aree with Reegade to a point. I&W dosent make an excuse for sloppy details and flashing. But I do believe it is neccesary in harsh enviorments.
