thanks for the pictures! great to see the product getting so many great reviews. I'm curious why you opt for vertical installation, just to eliminate extra taping?

We have seismic requirements to meet here. This means that all panel edges must be blocked. If I run the sheets horizontally, then I have to block every stud bay. By sheathing vertically I have less blocking and labor, get a stronger wall than sheathing horizontally w/out the bocking, and save labor on the taping.

But when we get up to the top of the gable I don't worry about the blocking much.

Anyone know if you should use ply clip with the 1/2" Zip roof panels? They are self gapping like the wall panels, but we always use clips when the framing is 24" oc unless we are using 5/8"

According to their installation info you aren't suppose to use the clips because it can interfere with the tape.

Beautiful work Tim. Thanks for the info.

I would like to know about the horizontal edge. Your upper wall has the strip on already, but the seam between floors isn't on yet. Is there going to be a flashing problem there? Do you just peel it back a little and tuck it under?

And you were able to get 9' sheets?

I haven't seen a layout stick in years. I didn't think anyone used those anymore.

Little icy start to the job!

Which edge are you asking about? I used 9' sheets for both floors, so there is just a seam at the joint there at the top of the first floor walls. The joint at the top of the wall gets covered by the soffit.

I'm a little slow on the uptake sometimes

Yes, the seam between floors. I was thinking of the "regular" detail where the lower wall gets tape first, then the horizontal seam goes over the top, then the upper walls goes over the horizontal seam.

I guess it doesn't matter on this detail since you have an exposed horizontal edge either way. It must stick real good to the wall. Did you have any rain days where you were putting the tape on in wet conditions?

Last week was perfect working weather. Sunny and highs in the low-mid 60's. The week before was forecast rain when we build the rakewalls and we only got a little wet one day early in the week. Literally a few hundred yards away and it was raining but not on us So no rain or moisture at all on the sheathing before taping. There was one rakewall that got rained on overnight but was dry by the time we finished the overhangs, so we taped it.

Tomorrow I have to build an odd gable rakewall, 4-12 starts at standard height and 12-12 starts at the bottom plate height. It is supposed to rain so we'll see if we can tape the seams or not.

We just sold the spec we had sitting that we framed over the winter http://picasaweb.google.com/TimothyU...eat=directlink So we will probably start another one soon, it is this one http://picasaweb.google.com/TimothyUhler/Lot34#

Nice pics again Tim,
You build a nice house.

Looks like a nice area too.
Is that penisula mostly residential?
Looks like more private Marinas, than commercial docks.

Was out that way in August, just after your heat wave, didn't see much new stuff going up other than for the off base soldgiers.

How do you attach the straps to the wall when you raise them? I use a 1" eye-bo;t thru the top plate or a header.
What kind of soffit is that? Ready to paint? Does it come with the vents already cut?

The straps have a loop at the end that we just stick a 2x4 through then screw to the topplates.

The soffit is LP Smartside vented soffit, and it is ready to paint and the vents are precut http://www.lpcorp.com/sidingtrim/lps...#soffit-vented Click on the "Smooth and Cedar Vented" for details

I like to use drywood sheathing. It is ice and water shield as well as an air barrier. Up here in the cold (Central Illinois) we have to use ice and water shield so it works great...

Re: Zip System Sheathing, Anybody Using It?

I prefer drywood sheathing over Zip. It has an ice and water shield laminated to the surface of the sheathing as opposed to Zip which is just a felt barrier...This completely eliminates the process of using the peel and stick ice membranes.

Re: Zip System Sheathing, Anybody Using It?

Hadn't heard of drywood. In the pic it looks like sharksin bonded to the sheet? Does it really have a sealing layer like I&W or is the "no I&W" claim like the 100,000 mile warranty that some car manufacturers give to imply that their car is better but is really just a marketing gimmick.

The surface of Zip is definitely not felt. It's much sturdier and water proof. Almost like a hard plastic layer.

Re: Zip System Sheathing, Anybody Using It?

Sharkskin is what we are laminating to the sheathing prior to its assembly on the wall or roof. All the same warranties apply. check out the web site at drywoodproducts . com if you want more info...

I am only posting this picture to test my photo posting abilities. It is my first time using this type of roof sheathing. I will still be using Triflex roofing paper although they say you don't need it with this product. I just can't get myself to skip the roofing paper.
