Worm Drive Saws

Lets just talk about worm drive saws. You either love em or ya hate em. But either way it makes for a good topic of conversation. I love em.

Re: Worm Drive Saws

Never used one and I've only once seen someone using one. For whatever reason they are not popular in my area.

I have 4 Skilsaw 77s and love them all. Also have a few sidewinders that I use primarily for hip roof framing when the opposite bevel is required. I want to get an 8 1/4 Skilsaw wormdrive but it'll have to wait.

Re: Worm Drive Saws

Started out with this one, but the Prazi did'nt work with it:

Bought this one and Prazi bolted up perfectly with a little blade guard cut and grind modification

Funniest part, i've still never used a worm drive to cut anything with a saw blade, only the prazi which is the only reason i bought the worm drive in the first place Seems awful big and heavy for production cutting, though they are smooth as silk i dunno, maybe someday i'll buy another one just to say i got it, but i've got 4 sidewinders all doing plenty of work for me already just fine, so maybe the worm drive will just be that magic pony i'd like to try, but wont ever do it even though it's right there and just needs a blade thrown in it

I worked on one jobsite where everyone had one, one guy had a cast iron cased one. I'll stick with my light Porter Cable, unless I need to rip fresh green lumber

Re: Worm Drive Saws

I have a Mag-77 with a finish blade on it, a Bosch with a framing blade, and Mall model 120 from the late '20s to the early '30s which spins a 12" blade on the right side, and weighs 36lbs. If you think a skil saw is too heavy to pick up, you do not want to use this saw.

Wow!
That is a beast! You must feel like a big man when you use that.

I want one of those now. I'm not sure what I could possibly use it for, but I want it.

Beams. I could also cut 2x6 on edge if I needed too. I use a 12" miter saw blade that I slightly modify to fit the square arbor.

I was working on a crew doing log trim, and one guy picked up the saw to make a cut and says that he needs to work out more if he's using my tools.

Right now it's sitting in my garage until I get to it and replace the seals or maybe the bearings. It cuts nice, but you have to be careful how the saw sits or the gear lube leaks back into the motor housing.

Re: Worm Drive Saws

The skill 77 has so much torque you can't bog it down. When it's a really deep cut or the wood is wet it keeps going. When they get old I cut cut expansion slots and masonry projects.
