What I'm Doing Tomorrow

will be lifting this roof tomorrow.

hopefully all told, less than 2 hrs.

The big section is a gable/gable. facing side to side.

the steep hip section goes on the front of the garage.

There is 6 trusses for the garage that will be lifted up loose.

The trusses are all set on the garage concrete walls.
The garage walls are built and will be craned into place when the trusses are set on the house.

The upright 2x4's coming up from the top chord are where the 3 piles of roof sheathing will be placed.

(best $350 I'll ever spend)

Looks good.

Any chance to be safe (on the ground) and productive (your way looks like its faster than doing it all up on the structure like they do around here) is always worth it.

MORE PIX PLEASE!!!

Please do! I've never seen it done this way. I am especially interested in the rigging to lift that safely.

If you are using a reputable crane rental house, the rigging should be brought and set up by them. Wait until you guys see a large section of steel trusses set like this. Thats where it gets fun. You are usually near capacity. Ask the poor guys that set the roof on Milwaukee's baseball stadium.

Re: What I'm Doing Tomorrow

I don't know how to post video

I can hardly work the laptop.

I will take more pics tomorrow.

As far as the rigging goes, I do what the crane operator wants. My plan is to lift the house roof in 2 16' sections. (there will be a couple loose trusses in the middle.)

After that the garage walls, They are already pre-sheathed so it`s just a matter of lifting them into place. Once they are on. The hip section is ploped onto the garage walls, then the loose garage trusses. (just have to remember to straighten the garage walls before I nail anything down.)

To lift, I nail a 16' 2x6 up to the peaks of the trusses, The crane uses 2 chains (usually) and hooks to the 2x6 close to the ends. This crane is like 70 tons or something so Its nowhere near capacity.
One of us stays on the ground, to spot for the operator, and the other jumps up on the wall and guides the section down.

A 16 foot section, is the most practical size to lift. I did a 30 foot section once and it took more time than it was worth. (way more)

The Company that is doing the lifting had BETTER NOT listen to you for the "how to". Maybe the "I would like To". But never how to lift. This is, after all, what they do and carry Insurance for.

Are you doing it this way cause you wanted to or are you just keeping busy until the truck is available?.

If you have a level area to do it, it is quicker. Its safer, less time in the air, you can set everything up, lift, and be done in no time. Less labor time for the crew, less hours to have the crane.

Ive done several large warehouse/commercial projects where I had to have parking areas done before I had building pad done. This is so that parking area can be stoned, paved, and used to pre assemble iron truss sections. Usually 50ftx50ft sections. Everything is welded, ready to go. You can do a lot of your work with a fork truck instead of a crane. Saving big dollars. Once ready, set your columns, then swing 50ftx50ft sections of roof up.

are you knut busting me now? I read the ladervater thread

I've used the same guy for like the last 10 houses.

I said earlier, I do what the crane operator says. He has veto power..

I just prepare the trusses the same as always.
He's happy, I'm happy.

He's lifted like a bazillion roofs, that's why I use him.

No, I wanted to do it this way, It's way faster. imo. It's spaced, braced and ready to race. All from the safety and convienience of being on the ground. And with only a 2 man crew, I like having the sheathing up there with us. nobody has to pass sheets up.

It works for us

one day I may have a zoom boom.

Re: What I'm Doing Tomorrow

We have done that similar operation several times. One roof we did for a garage was a 12/12 pitch for a 30'x 40' attached garage. That was a big lift. We had it sheeted before we lifted it (the HO wanted to shingle it himself, to save money). On another job, we built the main roof and the garage roof and sheathed and shingled both and lifted them. Shingles add a lot of weight to the finished roof, especially on cottage style roofs. It can make the balance point really hard to locate!

I'd love to see the results of your lift, Hughjazz.
