does the birdhouse authority have anything to add to the truss discussion? besides the well accepted fact that i don't know what I'm talking about?
not to say that I mind being reminded of the fact that I'm clueless by say, Warren, or loneframer, or even wallmax or framerman even. But I have to draw the line at birdhouse builders and general contractors from florida and OK.

Re: Trusses?

I was a stick framer for 20 years and i also did truss framing . They have a purpose just like anything else .
The problem nowadays is a lot of framers know how to put trusses up but they have no idea how to stick frame .As others have said trusses are great for wide spans .

i think trusses are the most wonderful thing to happen to construction since poured concrete. they are great for short spans, wide spans, middle spans. Never under-estimate the power of a 2x4!

Re: Trusses?

It amazes me... This guy is a year older than me and has been in the trades longer... I am so thankful that I know how to listen and learn from those that know way more than me.

I am curios to know though... Do you think an engineer was involved in making span tables for dimensional lumber used as rafters?

You want to cut a roof spanning 52' (26' rafters) before you get 1/2 done I will be sheeting my trussed roof... and by the way I will have less money spent on trusses AND the plywood to sheet it than you have in the ridge beam and 1 side of the rafters GUARANTEED. And when we bid against each other on that 50x75 shop... looks like I won... (even though I NEVER sell based on price) When your talking a couple of thousand dollars for what the client sees as no different. Trust me a homeowner will feel more comfortable with an engineers stamp on trusses spanning 52' feet than a big ass beam and rafters... Oh yeah BTW what size beam are you using to span that 75' or were you planning on putting stupid posts every 20'?

Re: Trusses?

I can only guess as a marginal contractor with a solid background in engineering, I must let Clem think he has it down now. I must say I have met very few egotistical asses that assume they are sh!t hot and so much better then anyone else can be.....amazing.

There are many contractors and framers on this board that know more then you will ever forget about construction....someday, you may appreciate that...until then, I doubt anyone can tell you anything.

Since this thread has ran it's course, closed.
