You're welcome. Perhaps one day, you too, could sit for the exam on one of the nation's most stringent GC licenses. Perhaps.

hope I'm spared when the judgement day comes
I'll just get a license in NYC. all you need is cashflow of 25k or more for a year and you're good to go. you don't even need to speak a language here.

Re: Trusses?

This thread has been very entertaining guys. At the risk of being called a bleach-blonde Geritol drinker, let me just say that over the last 25 years in the business I have learned that accepting the task at hand, regardless of whether you like the plan or not, with a can-do mindset will go far with the man cutting the checks. I have done work for no less than a dozen builders who all have their own opinion of the best way to do things. I am nothing more than a catalyst to bring their vision to life. I have done 1200 sq. ft. boxs with trussed roofs and 12000 sq.ft. duplexes on the beach with some of the most complicated roof plans imaginable. Having the ability to accept each challenge with the same integrity has served me well. I have already stated that I prefer stick building roofs, but that is just that, a personal preference. I haven't lived outside my box to experience homes like Warrens, never assembled a log cabin or built a timber framed home. I will however, graciously accept the invitation to learn a new aspect of my profession if the oportunity arises.

Oh thats right, You wouldn't know!
contrary to what you think Warren. I do know. Show me an impossible plan that can only be spanned with trusses and I'll stick frame it with a structural ridge for a MUCH better product. 52' span is only a 26' run on a rafter. nothing spectacular if you ask me. They rarely go bigger on residential, even on the big customs you're so proud of doing. So what's the big whoop?
I wouldn't try to stick frame an airplane hangar, but a 26' run is not too much to ask from a 16" TJI. Or even a 3x14.

Re: Trusses?

In a typical situation, how is a gable truss different from a stick framed roof with angled struts spiked rafter to ceiling joist? Stick framing 101 says NO, big girls never do THAT. Transfers unwanted live load onto your ceiling, so in addition to a bow in the undersized rafter, you're bowing the ceiling as well.

So what is the bottom cord of a truss, if not an undersized ceiling joist? And what are the top cords if not undersized rafters?

Are we relying on one undersized member to support another and vice versa? Seems like the recipe for failure.

I am fully aware that trusses have been around longer than me. And that everyone here is older and wiser. But if everyone's so gosh darned smart, why don't we come up with a code book that isn't revised every year and span tables that actually mean something.

And by the way, being that I'm in the remodeling end of it for the most part. Older does NOT mean wiser
