Re: Tool Pouches

I'm on my way today to go and see if I can locate a set of 5089 Belt/Bags (7 Pocket Pro Framer).

If I can't find it, I'm going to have to order a set online (which I hate to do because I really like to try something on before I buy it).

I was politely corrected on wearing my fully loaded tool belt around the fine finish work in an antique Brownstone we were working on in Brooklyn's Park Slope.

It was suggested that I get an apron.

I hated aprons...they brought back memories of my days on the roof with my Dad (loved working with my Pop, but once I discovered tool belts, I never looked back).

As luck would have it, on one of my trips to the Carhartt store in The City, I came across that apron!

I was like !

Coincidentally, I needed something as simple as a key caribiner clip and I couldn't find one sturdy enough so I kept putting it off.

Sure enough, once I purchased my Carhartt Apron (along with their Large Tool Bag) along with a few other "neccessities", they gave me a complimentary "Carhartt Caribiner Key Clip" for being one of their regulars and I they didn't even know I needed it.

They only cost about $20 and last a long time.

That pouch with a few select tools, an empty bucket (to be filled with other tools and/or material) and I'm good to go

ETA:
$15.99 here ~ Carhartt Duck Nail Apron

$15.99 and here ~ Carhartt Duck Nail Apron

Re: Tool Pouches

well, it seems that my new customized bags are done. I ended up getting black rhino bags since they are deep, which keeps nails from falling out, and lets me carry nailgun clips upright without sticking out of the top of the bags, plus the bags are 1/2 the width of my old bags, which makes it easier to walk between stud bays and other narrow spots.
I bolted on three clc pouches using chicago screws in order to give me tool storage where I want it- the black nylon bag on the far left of the screen holds spare utility knife blades, allen wrenches, impact gun adapter, and all the other little things that I need frequently enough to carry, but usually end up buried in the bottom of my bags, or the bottom of the tool box, right when I really need it. the square pouch on the back of the right bag caries the spirit level, multi angle square, and tape, via tape clip. the leather bag on the front of the right bag holds my chisel and nail punches.
I also added a Chicago screw and rope tie to divide up the speed square pouch on the left side into two hammer sleeves, or one angled hammer sleeve, which is how I usually carry a hammer when I don't have need for the second one. The white bag on the back is a garbage pouch for when I can't just drop dead nails and what not. With the belt adjusted right and the suspenders set right, I can barely feel that I'm wearing the bags, so I think I got it right.

Re: Tool Pouches

For framing I was using the cloth CLC framing bags. I'd go through a set about once a year. It was nice having the cloth because they would dry overnight (gotta love this Oregon rain). Unfortunately, it comes with velcro for the waist.

Re: Tool Pouches

My old heavy canvas tool belt is beginning to fall apart. its not leaking nails yet like my last one did before i retired it but the suspenders are now held on with a pair of shake nails woven through the webbing where they broke. The tape measure pocket is too small to hold the fat max tapes I want to switch over to so I only use the max steel ones which have shorter erections when you pull the tape out (7 feet) Guess it is time to renew. what I DON'T want is one of them ten inch wide Velcro weight lifter belts with another belt on top of them that holds all manner of everything pockets that you cant keep track of what tool is where, and you sound like a medieval knight in chain mail as you walk. I want something simple and light as possible which I will use suspenders on anyway, does anybody make anything where you can move the pouches around the belt and pin them to a custom location? Maybe I missed the survey but how many of you wear the tool belts in the back instead of the front? I tried that for a few years but could never get used to it, besides i have a calcium deposit in my shoulder so i cant do the reach around anymore and have gone back to wearing them in front. Should i check out occidental leather?

Re: Tool Pouches

occidental makes some great minimalist bags- check out the green light bags. you might also look into the occidental barrel bags. Occidental also makes some bags that are suppose to be adjusted and Chicago screwed in place, but as I recall, they are pretty big and made of heavy weight leather.
CLC makes some lightweight cordora bags as well.
also, if you like canvas bags, I was actually surprised by the quality of the canvas and leather bags made by AWP, like the rear bag on my setup. They are carried by lowes, but their stuff seems pretty well built, and it's fairly lightweight. Just set it up with a good quality belt like something from Occidental, and it will probably work pretty well.
Personally, I've found that you can't buy toolbelts based on a picture. You have to hold them, try them on, make sure that you like where the pockets are, ect, before you go ahead and get them. I drove around to every store in the area and looked at every tool belt they had for sale before I decided what I wanted to get for my belt.

Re: Tool Pouches

First off.....I am a backwards belt wearer... I prefer this when your up on a wall and lean over to nail and not watching all your nails fall to the floor. I wear a kunys 7 pocket all leather. The belt type so as you add clothes you don't need to pull everything apart to adjhust the belt.. i tried the cloth ones but found over time the bag decided to close up on you.I aslo use a cloth drill holder for my speed square, works out great and keeps a pocket empty.

I've been looking at aprons for the same reason, and I might get one of these:

OxyPro Work Vest

It looks like they cost right around $90

Re: Tool Pouches

i wear my bags on the side.

tempest- those bags seem huge. do you feel any shorter at the end of the day when wearing them fully loaded?

I have become somewhat of a minimalist when it comes to what i carry in my bags. i carry the things i use multiple times a day in my bags; stuff that is used once a day, three times a week, ect. stays in a bucket near where i'm working. fast and light right. if i am packing extra weight it will be in nails and not b.s.

I've looked at those....
I have a "Skillers" vest http://www.skillers.com/cgi-bin/stor...ory=polycotton
Always on the prowl for something better.
My sciatic nerve problems have eased off
so much since I started to wear suspenders,
and an apron with suspenders, over suspenders.....
Well it's just a bit much. For all its flaws, the vest
beats the pain.
I wonder sometimes if all the years of wearing
a regular apron is what screwed me up?

I don't think the pens and pencils would fall out, but I don't know if you would really want to carry the calculator and notepad in those pockets.

They are pretty big. They don't stick out from my side very far, about 1/2 as much as my old occidentals, and they are about as wide. They are however very very long, which is good- I can carry a fair amount of nails without filling them any where near full, so nails and such don't spill out if I end up crawling around in some attic or whatever. I wouldn't even want to think about the weight if I filled them all the way with nails (I think you could load half a 50lbs box of handdrives in these bags with room to spare). The back back bag is my trash bag for when I'm working in finished houses during remodels, and is usually empty.

As for tools, a lot of those tools such as the dead-blow are there because I needed it for the work I was doing right before I left on Friday. I also picked up a lot small stuff that belonged to me, that was spread around the job sight, and that I didn't want too get to spread out and lost.

And as I said before, with the belt and shoulder harness adjusted right, I don't really even feel the difference when I take them off, which is a big improvement over my old bags.

I know there a bit pricey, but the oxcidental pro framer belt, along with the oxy suspenders is very comfy!
