There is no such thing as perfect. Different guys want different things. A lot depends on what you will carry. A framers bags will be different than a trimmers bags, which is different than an electricians bags.

I like the padded canvas bags, some guys like the leather better. I like suspenders on mine, other guys don't. Some guys want their tape in the front, some on the side, some in the back. Some guys want a loop for a tri-square, other guys use a speed square.

You won't find perfect bags, if you try hard enough you might find some that are close to perfect for you. You can't get them right until you think about how you will use them.

I once saw bags that you could move the individual pouches around, they were attached with machine screws. I wish I had bought them when I saw them... they were not in my size though.

Now I wear bucket boss mullet busters and I like them a lot.

My pet peeve:

Its' a TOOL BELT.

A "belt that holds your tools".....

The "pouch" is an individual component that you attach, hang, or put on it, to help hold more tools .....

(.....thanks, ..... i feel better now.....)

MTM's or Mendoza Texile Manufacturing. Bought my first pair in 97 which are still is good shape. Bought a set of boulder bags that fell apart the day I bought them in 2002. Bought a new set of mtm's a month ago and couldn't be happier.

Tool Belts

From personal experience, Rooster Products (which I believe has either been acquired by McGuire/Nicholas or vice/versa) make a really nice oil tanned series of leather belts.

The have an array of belts, different pouches, accessories, etc...so one can customize their belt.

I have a set up for roofing (one pouch on left side with hammer holster and knife holster on right side) and one for carpentry (2 bag framing pouch set up).

Their fairly priced, last a long time (I've had my sets for over 5 years) and are easy to find throughout different stores (Home Depot, Sears, etc...you might find the same products under different names like Craftsman, Home Depot, McGuire/Nicholas, etc...but the build and quality are identical).

I'm looking into Occcidental Leather's products next. Have my eye on their 7 Bag Pro-Framer.

Ultimately, borrow some that you see around on sites and see how they fit you.

My old man uses just a cloth give away apron and he still flies with that.

Never worn anything by occidental but I bought a mulletbuster by bucket boss a year ago and absolutely swear by it. And it was about half the cost of every other set I was looking at. Try it you'll like it. Murph

OK, You win, I reckon it is just habit for me. The carpenters I started in the biz with back in '78 wore aprons, they were leather. I have always prefered "Pouches" worn on the side, attached to a "Belt" with suspenders, whatever they are called.

Thanks for all the great links. I am looking to upgrade my "bags" so I can have a place for everything, rather than the right pouch becoming a catch all. Oh, and are y'all front or rear baggers. This came with my 12" SCMS back in 03.

Sparky wears a "pouch"!
"Tool belt" sounds Hollywood-ish to me.

I got tired of wearing a massive(heavy) tool belt so I quit. Now most of the time I just use a belt-clipped hammerloop with my utility knife and other necessary items in my back pockets. Tape measure clipped to my right front pocket. Pencil in the right front coin pocket or behind my ear. Monster hook on my belt for hanging the drill/nail gun when I need both hands for positioning the material.

well, I have occidental bags now- the synthetic beltless bag system. I've had them a few years, but they have a lot of life left in them. I have a few complaints however, and started looking around for something to fix the problems- what I've found is that no one seems to make bags that solve all the issues I have with my current bags, while keeping the things I like about them the same. For example, since I hammer and write left handed, I like to keep anything that gets hit by a hammer (cat's paw, chisel, nail punch, ect.), and any kind of measurement tool (tape, square, spirit level) that gets used at the same time as a pencil on right side. the problem is that it seems none of the companies feel the need to have places for chisels and levels and whatnot on the fastener bag.

I think I've found some clc cordora bags that will work with a little modification, so I'm gonna go check that out today, along with going to a few places I haven't checked yet and see what I can find. Hopefully I'll have more useful bags by monday.

I have the occidental bags- oxy special edition bags- I love them. I can fit everything in them and they are comfy a big price tag but in the end it will last me for a few years. I can put 4 pounds of 20d nails in the small side bag.

I have been dealing with Occidental. Have done a bit of research, and since I am a SouthPaw, Occidental has worked with me and they make a COMPLETE line of toolbelts especially for Lefty's. They have a VERY extensive line of tool belts designed on who you are and what you do for a living. From framing to carpentry, electrical and finishing, they will get you covered. YOU WILL PAY, but it will be a LONG time before you pay again!
