Re: Steel Ridge
That's a hell of a ridge. Wouldn't an LVL do the job and be a lot lighter for you guys. Nice to see some pics of home (ex Mancunian.)

Re: Steel Ridge
I notice that you give the larger dimension before the smaller dimension when describing dimensional lumber. Is that the typical way of describing lumber in your parts? Here, we's say 2x4 instead of 4x2. Interesting.

Re: Steel Ridge
After looking at your pictures and reading your post I notice that you don't seem to have what we call sheet goods like plywood or osb which come in sheets that measure 4'x8'.You probably don't have what we call an lvl either which is an extra thick peice of plywood used for structural support. Is this the case or do you not use it in what you do?
Dave.

Re: Steel Ridge
Hi, lvl rare only made special, building regs want steel on concrete padstones, collars incompleat and only for a flat ceiling for downlighers,
there is lots of ply but it is expensive, the roofs are never sheethed with ply. This roof had 4 Velux roof lights cut in later. Alwas say 6x2, not 2x6. There is a reluctance to accept cange over hear especialy with smaller builders |

Re: Steel Ridge
In the U.K and Australia they always say 4x2. To them we have is backwards.

Re: Steel Ridge
Summertime, it appears that your lumber is actual dimensions. In other words a 4x2 is actually 4"x2" . Is this the case? Here in the states a 4x2 is actually 3 1/2"x1 1/2".
Just curious. Dave.

Re: Steel Ridge
our timber(lumber) is mostly what they call nominal size, so 4x2 is usually around 95mm by 45mm, yeah we are supposed to be metric now but most Guys i work with use a combination of metric and imperial depending whats easier for a given job.
Summertime is right about our regs. loving steelwork, sometimes you cannot believe the stuff we have to put up, its crazy when your putting up an addition to an existing roof which might be entirely 4x2 with NO extra beams/steel, and yet we are having to use much bigger timbers and steelwork. The original roof is still Ok after maybe 50 years, where's the sense ?

Re: Steel Ridge
Yeah, we run into similar situations here every day. The new work is built to much stricter codes than the old work ever was. I quit asking myself questions like, "Where's the sense?", when I realized that it's going into the price the customer pays anyhow. It's not coming out of my pocket. If they want things built to withstand all manner of fire, wind, hurricane, natural disaster, riot, and world calamity, that's okay with me. What's most frustrating to me (us, often times) is when a homeowner or businessowner hires a "hack" to do the work for a much cheaper price and it doesn't meet code. At least with licensed men and a set of codes, everyone's offering prices that are pretty much an "apples to apples" comparison.
