Re: Sheathing Walls On The Ground Or Standing?

hughjazz, there are a few builders here that sheet the walls after they are standing. That is taking the long way home. But the boss on those crews are not doing the grunt work. They are riding around in their trucks bitching how he can't make any money. We always have to house warp the walls. I even tried knocking off 50 cents a square foot not to do it. No luck.

I always do sheathing, housewrap &when possible set widows on the ground.I only stand first on walls built on slab or foundation.I always check foudation wals for level w/transit or water level *(long pieice of clear plastic tubing filled w/water,cant be out of calibration, costs next to nothing, most accurate levl known to mankind) If the floor is level & you are as picky as I am when it comes to cutting plates & squaring the walls you can't go wrong. I have tried both ways & will never be convinced that there is any valid reason to do anything more than absolutetely necessary after the walls are up. Back in the days of masonite&T111
siding I even did the siding on the ground & hung the soffits at the top of walls completely finished except for the facia board.

I also build any bumpouts on the wall while its onthe deck complete w/roof framed & sheated.Fireplace chases are an excellent example, they are not only easier by far to build on the wall while on the floor, they also act as a temporary brace when standing the wall.Once the bottom plate of the chase hits the floor that wall cant tip on out.I beleive that any one *Qualified to run a framing crew can easily figure out how to pre build the soffits so the rafters or trusses will plane to the top of the subfacia.I also pre-cut all rafters including hip & valley jacks ,usually after the floor is decked but before walls are built.I like to do this after hours or on weekends so I don't get distacted. I have had many framers act like this is some kind of amazing feat but I'msure w/a little thought anyone who can frame can figure it out easily.

Roger that, just the way I learned. Over lap the sheathing. I also nail down the bottom plate at an angle on the inside to hold it in place. Then when you stand the wall, the nails hold it while it goes up.

Re: Sheathing Walls On The Ground Or Standing?

I think ive read 5-6 threads revolving around sheathing in the air or on the ground. Funny thing is alot of the same names get involved in each one. They always end up with everyone agreeing that their way works best for them and its what they are most comfortable with. I will never sheath an entire house in the air for many reasons, and I respect all the reasons why guys hate the idea of doing it on the ground.

I do think some of the different techniques are related to what region you learned or currently work in...
