Sheath Walls While On Floor Or Later

Do you attach the sheathing to your walls before or after you raise them? I've seen it done both ways. Any benifits / catches to either method?

thanks

Re: Sheath Walls While On Floor Or Later

I sheathe on the floor if I can. unless the wall is too tall to lift easily, or just too dang heavy for whatever reason. I'll even paper it flat too.

Re: Sheath Walls While On Floor Or Later

I prefer to sheath them before standing them on 2nd floor but not the 1st floor. Besides, if you are building off of 1st floor slab, it would be a real pain to shear them on the ground and then manuever the awkward beastly sheared walls up and onto all the a.b.'s and HD bolts.

Re: Sheath Walls While On Floor Or Later

When I was still framing most of our first floor walls were 9' tall so we always put a sheet on before standing them. Then fill in the rest and tie it to the floor and sill plates later. But on garages and stuff were we would be lifting right onto bolts we would not sheet it.

Sheet them on the floor! Takes hours off the job!

I have never not sheeted on the floor. Seems like it woudl be a real pain to do it after the wall is up? Even Gable trusses get sheeted before they go up.

We don't sheath any walls at all. When we're done framing we have sheathing crews that come in and they can fly. They can sheath a 4000 s/f house in 3 hrs.

Joe Joe Dancer, I have to agree, 4000sf in 3hrs seems a mite bit heavy for my boots.

Re: Sheath Walls While On Floor Or Later

Actually it's not BS. I've had them do 2 houses in one day. It's usually a 7 man crew. They land on the site at 6 and they're gone by 10 at the latest. That's walls, roof, gables, hips and all the windows and doors cut out.

Bob,
You obviously have been around a while and also know that things are diferent all over and guys who sheath the walls before they're up is one way and guys like me who sheath the walls later is another way. Regional differences.

I'm sure you will believe me when I say that my sheathers come in with 10-12 guys and sheath a 4000 s/f house in 3 hrs. If you have ever seen sheathers and the way they move you would know in one second that what I'm saying is true.

These guys are sheathers and that's all they do every day and they sheath two houses a day.

Re: Sheath Walls While On Floor Or Later

What length of 8' wall do you think 1 person could lift with just the bottom row of sheathing on?

Im getting ready to build a 16 x 24 garage and on the side walls, I can do (3) 8 ft walls, or (2) 12 foot walls. I was planning on attaching the bottom row of 1/2 plywood before I lift the wall to make the following row up much easier to sheath

What do you think?

Well, how big are your guns?

It all depends on what kind of openings (headers). I would think the 8 foot walls would work best for one hombre.

Rent some wall jacks and lift as much as you like.
