Roof Design Options
We build boat docks with gable and hip roofs, mainly because that is all people expect. Its getting boring ... same designs everywhere.
Below is an example of how we build our roof systems. I am looking for a couple alternatives ... one that we could charge a similar price for, and then another as a fancier upgrade. Any ideas? ![]()

Re: Roof Design Options
I can't imagine the labor but here is one high-end dock. We framed it and our customer had a finish crew come in for the rest. It has crown molding on the underside.

Re: Roof Design Options
That second example looks too top heavy for my tastes. I can imagine something that looks a bit more Polynesian, it would be light and airy with a negative curved roof, with fairly long eaves about 32" or more. I could think of all kinds of things. do you have anymore parameters in mind?

1. For the standard hip roof alternative I would like something 2-guys could build in one day. Not including the time it takes to install metal or the frame we use to band the pilings together. Currently 2 guys can frame the roof you see here in half a day (10 man-hours). 2. For the upgraded alternative ... something between the standard hip and that second roof example. No more than 30-40 man-hours framing. - prefer to stick with metal or shingle coverings.

Re: Roof Design Options
Oh man, I can see a shed roof like a Craftsman style with split beams across the posts. That could easily be done by two guys in ten hours. Metal or shingle would work well. Perhaps an Elk Presique comp. shingle. Ooo, very nice.

It's boring to you, but it looks pretty cool. And your customers only have to see one of them. They're not going to get bored of it.

Re: Roof Design OptionsQuote:
As you can imagine, a weekend of boaters represents prospective customers and the lake is our showroom. The roof system seemed to be the largest most logical place to make a design statement. We plan to do some fun and interesting changes to our handrail systems but these upgrades are considerably more expensive than what I hope we can do a roof system design upgrade for.

Re: Roof Design Options
Oh, o.k, I just thought it looked good, compared to the ones I've seen anyway. I don't think I've ever seen one for a house around here. I've seen them in marinas, and they all look pretty trashy. People around here just leave their boats outside. It looks like a good idea, but I wonder if it's even legal around here since I haven't seen one.

Re: Roof Design Options
How bout just adding a cupula (spl?) atop one of your current designs and the customer could individualize with color, symbols, signage, etc.? Maybe you've done this already, just trying to throw out ideas.
