Rock-solid Newel (exterior)

After a few months, that bottom newel at the base of the stair is almost always loose and flapping. This is my solution…

I know, you use lags or even carriage bolts, but you’re still hooking onto that bottom stair point, which is the weakest piece of lumber on the building and brutally prone to splitting.

The secret to a solid newel lies in the second riser. Run it on past the newel. Notching the newel around the second riser is better still. Now you can nail both the full girth of the stringer, and the riser to it. Add a bottom plate or a back girder for more strength still.

It may look a little weird, but only because it's not what you're used to. In five years it will look very nice, being still straight and sturdy.
