This stone detail wraps around the house... The patio was drie layed (stoners' preferred method). Their Joints are impressive with hammers and chisels, IMO!!

Re: Radius Jig For Cutting 2x Rafters

This is very small house if you haven't noticed.... Other than slamming up a 5000 sq' home with fancy trim, I like this one....

Oh, I was a little bummed today. Our specialty mill is slow so they are going to be milling out many of our radiused rafters. I REALLY wanted to be involved other than installing....Oh well, there'll still be some fun stuff I hope.

Geez I wonder if they have a cnc?

Maybe not, but that is a good job for a shop environment. The way I see those rafters they are millwork.

Maybe next time you'll get to play with the crafty stuff young man. You seem suited for it. There must be some more fun stuff on that job besides those rafters anyway.

Probably a good move to have the mill cutting those rafters and save some time so you don't get caught without the roof on before the season gets into full swing.
Sure would hate to have to shovel off that job site after a lake effect snow storm.

Enjoying the pics!

Oh, man, you're so right!!...This time last year we got hammered by snow and it didn't stop until March!! We know it's coming so everyday is a blessing!!!!

I got thinking about the rafters, and with over 100, I figure I'd be sick of it after about 5. The hips will be elevated from the commons so there'll be a radius at the corners on the horizontal plane as well....The jack rafters will be fun! I'll have my chance to scratch my head!

With that in mind....I have a question that will come up down the road...we are applying facia!

We got that really crappy blast in Oct with the snow and the leaves still on the trees everyone panicked. We had 2 nice additions we wanted to get out of ground for winter work but no matter how much selling we did they were positive we'd have a foot of snow on the ground now. Silly ppl and thinking they can foretell the weather.

Re: Radius Jig For Cutting 2x Rafters

We're working on the second floor joist system....The triple 40'x16' lvls are carrying the second floor walls. The lower roof rafters meet the side wall of the second floor and the seat cut sits on the rim @ the first floor walls....because of the 16" bearing beams, we had to rim the whole first floor with 16" lvls. Hope that makes sense. I'll re-post the elevation drawing.

Re: Radius Jig For Cutting 2x Rafters

Re-claimed 3"x9" exposed hemlock floor joists...my project today was to sort through the good and bad, cut and profile the joists. 3 sizes: one for the right and left of the triple lvls, one length for the center, I had to have atleast 16 5' cut off for the porch posts that sit on the columns.

This was a fun challenge since it was up to me to decide the most efficient usage, and what joist are going where.

Re: Radius Jig For Cutting 2x Rafters

These are to show how the Prazi attachment cut...

The simple jig made it super easy to cut precise, and having the jig right on the cut reduced the tear-out. I realized that when I got distracted and cut my jig....The areas of the jig that still met my pencil line didn't tear out like where I mangled the jig.

I didn't try it, but I imagine if your score your line first you'd get an even nicer cut.

There's no doubt a 12" slide miter would've cut this material perfectly, but the timbers were cumbersome enough that once I got them on the horses it was more efficient to cut them like I did since I was working alone.

Re: Radius Jig For Cutting 2x Rafters

I just got word....the ARCUS blade DID NOT WORK....

From what I was told, the arcus blade cuts a radius, but too tight. I guess they were fighting the saw trying to keep it running straighter. It was my big idea, but nope. I suggested just trying a regular combo blade...no one cared...SO...our mill is banging out our rafters on the band saw.

I can't really get to the mill to take picks (I can, but it's like 15 miles out of the way)...we'll be doing some adjusting along the hips (I know) so I'll try to show the problem.

We should be setting rafters the week after Turkey Day...'God bless' our November weather!!!! 2 more weeks and we'll be in good shape.....
