Re: Radius Jig For Cutting 2x Rafters

Step 2....with azek...struggling....My plan is evolving....enough dicking around, I'm going right at tomorrow.

I have 8 hips to do I figure I'll get after the 8th....BTW...I hate the sharp transition, the radius will be much softer!

Re: Radius Jig For Cutting 2x Rafters

I couldnt find a pic of one and mine got legs a few years ago, but I used to have a small cordless bosch router. That thing was awsomely fast for weaving. A bearing bit and put them up router them off, cut perfect everytime. I tried it with a large router and the table is to big to get a good flush cut with one, plus there heavy. I couldnt find any online but bosch site has cordless rotozips a corded one would probably be just as good.

Great looking work,WNY. Seems like a real challenge, and you have it under control. Must be a PITA working in all that snow.

Looking forward to seeing the next round of pictures

Re: Radius Jig For Cutting 2x Rafters

Every day I am humbled more an more...Oh man...1st and second facia + soffit just don't want to cooperate...Azek bends nice, but there's no rigidity, so floating out of the curve is tough. Whoever framed the roof is an a$$hole

So True....I picked the only place that was shoveled out!...I think I'll keep tweaking and have someone clear me a spot around the corner tomorrow.

I started there 2/3 out of vanity...(looks cool from the street!) and 1/3 'cause I wanted to see what it would look like from the street

Fascias and soffits are gonna look sweet. I'm kinda glad it's not me that has to sort all that out though. Great job.

Re: Radius Jig For Cutting 2x Rafters

Atleast There's some progress being made....The facia and soffit is kicking my a$$.....As soon as I figure out one challenge, I'm hit with another...

azek is nice for bending, but it doesn't want to sit straight for sh!t! After a lot of screwing around, I ended up adding a 1x2 sub-facia, which takes out the waviness and inconsistancies but changes everything

I've made it around 3/4 of the house without the soffit (which is radiused also)....I've pulled out almost every trick I have.....There are no square or straight reference points to start from. The original drawings were changed so there's no numbers to punch into a calculator....even if I could I wouldn't know how to do it.....

My biggest problem is that the tails were pre-cut and the commons were slammed up and sheathed before they were planed out!....I'm SO mad at my foreman who figured out the patterns. Yeah, he set all the commons in 2 days and left the rest to me....There's a 1.5" hump in the straight run.

I haven't taken pics of the facia, it looks cool from the street, but it's not right...YET....I'm feeling the pressure......

WNY,

The shakes and window trim look great. That is a really interesting house, very time consuming work. The whole double curve fascia and soffit detail is amazing.

Keep up the good work, and post tome more pictures of the eaves....

The most important tool you can bring to that job is a sense of humor.

Anyone who has the audacity to criticize your work needs to strap on a belt and try working those fascia lines. I told you earlier on in this thread that I'm kinda glad I don't have to sort that out.

BTW, you're right. Azek is not a good choice for holding itself straight. I cant think of a better material for making those sweeping bends though. Like I said "Keep a sense of humor".

Thank you, I appreciate the kind words....your project in the 'Woodlands' is well beyond the scope of anything we do. I'm very complimented that you've taken an interest in this project!

Thanks lone....Thankfully, I have a great sense of humor....I really try to keep everyones chins up. I was feeling defeated Friday, along with a couple other guys.

Every step of this project has challenged us all....the grunt is helping me, and the helper is weaving flared corners and scribing shakes, the foreman is trying to stay on top of 5 calls a day from the HOer,and ever changing 're-claimed' material lists, color samples, details etc...The learning curve has been tremendous...aka....good times!
