A Quick Question

If I were to frame something, say my own house, over a somewhat long period of time, would there be any drawbacks or code issues with coating the framing as I go along with something such as an exterior paint, or a stain to prevent rot?

Re: A Quick Question

To tell you the truth, I'm not exactly sure. The project isn't in the works yet, It's more of a future what-if. I just wanna make sure that if I take my time, everything will be safe and secure.

Re: A Quick Question

Framing a whole house? The time you spend treating/spraying time and cost could probably be better used framing. Environment will play the biggest card. The real question is why are you planning to take so long? Maybe breaking the project down into stages would work better.

Re: A Quick Question

don't paint, that's going to seal any moisture in and IMO will rot it out faster if you don't get it all in the first place. If anything, get something like a watersealer. I think tarping might be OK, but again, if it leaks in a little bit, yer screwed again. either way, it doesn't sound good to slowly pick away at it.

Not necessarily. Here in the rural areas of VA the inspectors will work with you and dont usually put a time limit on things. Now if you are a GC then yes, there is a time limit. But not if you are doing it for yourself.

Re: A Quick Question

Oh geez. I need to take pics of this particular house in Tulsa. This dude took a ranch style house and added what looks to be a castle onto the side of it. Its been going on for years. 3 story foam block addition next to a one story house. He's supposed to be nuts. Some of the plywood "hole" covers are rotten, its been going on so long. They recently got started working on it "full" time and all the guys working on it look like high school students.
