I'll need to frame the walls anyways to hold the drywall and such, but since they'll just be hanging walls, do I still have to have 16" centres? Also, should I insulate the outside walls?

This is part of the reason why the industry has such a bad reputation to some folks...a "general contractor" who doesn't know even the most basic stuff.

Nice intro, by the way.

I thought this forum could have been a useful tool for everybody involved. However, (with my first post) it seems to have proven just to be a source of entertainment for those who hold themselves in a higher regard than perhaps what is fair? Either way, thank you to those who took the time to offer helpful insight; to the others: I was going to apologize for the wasting of your time, until I realized it was by your choice (perhaps a lack of something else better to do), that you chose to laugh instead.
you asked something that I would expect most beginning framers to know. If you don't know something as simple as that, you shouldn't be out on your own as a general contractor. You should be a laborer until you learn how to do the basics on your own. Oh, and by the way, CookeCarpentry was being as sarcastic as anyone else. 8' centers is way way to wide for sheet rock. 2' is the absolute maximum, and use thicker drywall to stiffen it up if you go that wide.

Did he change his profile? I thought it said "roofer". Don't they simply have to know which side of the shingles go up? Well.......... maybe a bit more than that. But I really don't think OP is claiming to be a GC.

Or am I missing something.... like Cherry being the same guy?

I'll have you know that I was not being sarcastic! Who are you to tell me I was sarcastic?!

I was, in fact, offering up sincere advice, 8' o.c framing saves on material...and in this economy everybody needs to save a buck!

Tempest - just kidding about the ^ post.

Cherry - sorry if I hit a nerve with you. My reply was sarcastic, because I thought the question was a joke. Oftentimes when we see a low post count and clueless questions posted on here, we assume it is a homeowner posing as a GC.

I think before you start labeling yourself a GC, you need to get more experience as a helper, apprentice, carpenter, whatever. What you posed was a very basic framing question that even a day 1 helper should know....

Davinci is a roofer that wanted to know which was used most- 16" oc or 12" oc. After that question was asked, Cherry, who claims to be a general contractor, asked in his very first post, how wide of spacing you can go. Nobody made fun of Davinci.

If you are just starting out, and don't something as basic as that, then I am sorry, but I will say it, you have no business being a general contractor. Not knowing basic things such as O.C. spacing is like someone claiming they are a pilot but having no idea how to fly a plane...
