Open Basement Wall; Insert Window? Help, Please!
Hi Guys.
I have two Q's. First: I have a basement finish coming up soon and the owner wants a framed wall opened up and a very large window installed for more light. My Q is, What is the best way to shore up the (main) floor above? This is a brand new house and I'm thinking of a beam across the joists and jacking it up about a quarter inch. Shouldn't I be OK if the beam rests on posts on the floor at the footing area, close to the wall? This wall is a two-story wall with a gable! Second Q is: What is the avg. sq.ft. costs in your areas for a basement finish? (I may be moving to another part of the country in a year or so.) What kind of advice can I get from you guys? Thanx in advance!

To the first: Yes, that's what we do. Just be judicious with the jack or you'll be repairing drywall upstairs.

Judicious is right, 1/4" is too much, just take the weight off and get the new stuff back in there.

a.)Make sure that there is no elaborate flooring material above that area. Example: Tile work that can crack when 'jacking up' or disturbing the floor joists/ beam.
b.) Average Basement remodeling starts at $20K, up to $30K dependant on SF. Add a bathroom into the mix and it will jump $10K to $15K.
