Re: Need Some Advice Framing To A Beam
would have saved me a bunch of work about two years back. we had a two story addition. basement with foundation was same issue with homeowner. wanted hidden beam with no support in the center of the room because downstairs was gonna be his wifes pottery room and the sunroom above was to be the showroom for her pieces. we had to set two beams like that flush to the joists. we took a torch and cut holes staggered high and low in the beam then padded out one side drilled a pilot hole with 10" long 1/8 inch bit, countersunk the heads of the carriage bolts with 1" paddle then punched through with 1/2 bit. laid that whole thing on 3' nylon straps lumber side down filled in the other side, strapped it all and then reversed the process except 1.5" paddle. then we set the beam and screwed hangers onto it, then joist as normal decking. worked out but I ended up scratching my head for a while thinking there was an easier way to set the joists into the I beam.
The one thing I picked up from my welder turned helper buddy is to burn the holes through the beam not drill them. definitely saved a bunch of money on drillbits and time. Alex |

Re: Need Some Advice Framing To A Beam
OK guys, just finished a meeting with the homeowners and engineers and decided to go with 12" I-Joist that will clear span the 20' needed fo the whole room. we're going to loose a few inches of ceiling height but it's the best way to do it. the best part is there will be no steel I-Beam to deal with and it will be cheaper than the I-beam idea. thanks for all the help and ideas for this
