My Next Roof

This project has changed 14 times so far. The latest was the back porch getting wider. It ended up switching the corresponding ridge direction. Pix will start on Monday. 2x6 rafters / 2x8 h/v/r.

Its not 100% calc'd yet.

Careful...

Not to be a prick, but be careful with those statements, those statements get guys sued and can make the industry look bad.

ICF is R-22 (for arguement sake that can vary by 1 +/- depending on the form) plus about R-.05 for concrete (again +/-).

People say R-52 or R-50 or R-40 or whatever but it is a simulated number meaning the wall 'acts' like an R-52 in otherwords if you were conventional framing and stuffing pink in the walls what would you have to do to acheive the same as what the ICF is giving us. What is R-52, 18" thick or so of pink?

ICF does have zero infiltration through the wall like wood frame can, this helps us achieve the 'acts like R-52' factor.

For what it's worth, in my area ICF 'acts like R-36' which is still pretty decent.

Nice looking roof by the way, that keep ya busy for a day or three

Thanks Chris...that'll teach me to quote the GC.
I hate that.
Maybe that's his sales hype.

I've heard him on quite a few occasions shoot that number. The blocks are by Logix, out of Canada. 11 7/8" OD with 6" of crete.

Like I like to tell anyone who will listen...I'm no concrete guy. If ever I get called to help out with a pour, I'm quick to be the screed board puller and tool washer. It takes a disciplined person to love concrete....not me.

I see wood.....I get wood. Well not like that.

Wallmaxx,

Whatever you make doing these roofs, with your cut sheets and plans, is not enough. Impressive to say the least.

Wallmaxx- I am guessing thats not a roof design program. How long does it take to draw that up?

Its AutoCAD. A couple hours to draw it out quick (single line vs actual 1 1/2" wide representation) and then run it through my scientific calc. It really speeds things up when you hit the ground the next day.

In the old days (1989) I would do all this on-site on scraps of 2x6. Now, its easier to sit at the computer, drink some coffee and when done, run it through the laminator. Makes roof cutting so easy...even I can do it.

Actually, I am able to hand off laminated copies of what I need done to a couple of good carpenters and they can really produce alot of correct components efficiently. (Less on-site brainwork by me means less on-site mistakes by me.)

Re: My Next Roof

I will have to try that on my next roof. I do draw up footing prints when I do decks, hand it to the guys and even they can't screw it up.

Re: My Next Roof

Framing done.

whew....finally had a couple guys help for a week.

I tried some new ideas out.

1. I put ledgers ripped at the hip backing angle under the jacks connected to the LVL valleys. Had the room and it just added a bit more "overkill" to the weakest region of a stick framed roof system.

2. I actually laid out my hips and valleys...first time in 20 years. One of the helpers asked how he would know where the jacks would go. I would typically brace the hip/val straight and they go where they go. But since he asked, I thought it wouldn't hurt. Now I am going to do it every time.

Re: My Next Roof

Why are you mapping out all of your rafters on cad? just to show you a estimate or so you know the pattern?
Looks good either way, if you have any problems w/cad feel free to pm me or if you need to see your complicated roof designs in 3d before building I can take care of that too. I don't mind helping people out
