Re: Joist Cutout

Sorry, my complete post did not go through.

I just visited the Sister DIY forum and a poster there wants to do some plumbing work that is going through two cutouts in his joists and he made one of the cutouts larger. The original installation does not appear to meet code and it looks like this poster made it worse. Whats your opinion? The post is titled "Remove Cast Iron Pipe". Go to:http://www.diychatroom.com/ and take a look at the joists and pipe.

Do I have to register there too?
Kinda like the monkey house isn't it??
Anyway, there isn't enough info, as usual.
I'd say he needs to get that out of there and sister those joist.
maybe drop the elbow down below and bulkhead it?

Re: Joist Cutout

When I saw the joists, I recall a thread by a pro about the limits of notches in a joist (length and width) and these joists appear no wider then 8 inches. Thats why I called them cutouts and not notches. I would like to offer him a professional opinion but can't because I am just a highly skilled DIY and like you say, not enough info is given. Right off the go, it caught my eye and I suspect it was not originally installed to code.

Re: Joist Cutout

I think I'm registered now.
Rule of thumb is 2-2-2
2" from top
2" from bottom
2" from the end
That breaks 2 out of 3!

Re: Joist Cutout

That's what I thought. I'll go back there and tell him to get someone to show him how to make that repair.
