I Joist Blocking

when framing with TGI's are you allowed to nail blocking into the sides of the flanges without filling in the web and useing hangers that wrap on top of the joists?

You don't need blocking when using I-joists unless it's spec'd on the plans.

We always nailed through the flange without filling the web unless specified on the prints.

If you insist on using blocking follow TJI installtion guide and scroll down to where it says "Cantilever".

Re: I Joist Blocking

First that is a pretty vague question.

What kind of blocking are we talking about? Intermediate blocking for roll stiffness, cantilever blocking, intermediate blocking for walls above. etc. etc.

Now to answer the question. When you order a TJI package they are always engineered and have to be per code. So read and do what the engineered drawings tell you to do.

Did you look at the link I sent you? It will answer all your questions especially since they are the I-joists you are using. What does your plans say?

Re: I Joist Blocking

yes joe i did veiw the page you posted that the whole reason i ask. i was told you shouldnt nail into the sides of the flanges. i didnt no if that meant for mid span things like block or at all. when i saw reinforcement being nailed into the flange i thought it might be because it was on the end.
also im not useing them i was just curious. just trying to learn.

Re: I Joist Blocking

Alot of time it will get speced out in the engineering to block between TJI's on all pony walls and/or interior walls (if you are running TJI's on the second floor). They will also have certain spots where 2 o3 blocks will need to be installed as well, but yes with your TJI package, you will recieve the engineering plans and it will tell you exactly what to do.

Block the first three, to take the sway out, also block all bearing walls.

And a good contractor you will catch that and adjust accordingly, even if it means adding more joists.

The worst problem I run in to is not the tub and toilets, but where the vent pipes go. There is always a joist centered under the wall, so I double the joists there and leave a space for the vent pipe. The engineers have had no problems with it, and you don't have the plumbers hacking it apart.

find a better engineer. My guy at least marks the plumbing on the layout, then it's up to me to confirm it.
