How Many Nails Through King Stud Into Side Of Header

How many nails do you put through the side of the king stud into a built up 2x10 with 1/2 inchplywood between sandwich header?I've looked through my international residential code book and can't find anything. They have a fastener schedule for structural members table that lists every other connection.
Our new, 24 year old inspector has been picking me to death on this.Usually we have 5-6 nails but some only 4 nails(3 inch senco's)It seems 4 would be plenty in 9 1/4 inches.6 seems like overkill and a good chance at splitting the 2x4 out.

I think we would do 3-4 per 2x10 (so 6-8 nails per side) All very well placed and stagered.

Re: How Many Nails Through King Stud Into Side Of Header

I think the minimum is 3 per 2x, so 6 total, minimum. I nail the bejesus out of this, or I di at least, don't frame much anymore. Nails are cheap, a day of work missed because of the inspector isn't. a dbl 2x10 with ½" ply, I personally use 6-8, triple, 10-15 in that range. Overkill, maybe, but I've never had a discussion about nails in headers from an inspector.

You framers really have inspectors counting nails? Jeeze... I thought electrical inspections were rough.

Re: How Many Nails Through King Stud Into Side Of Header

we had a triple truss as part of the roof plan on one house I framed- the nailing schedule to nail them together was three nails every four inches everywhere on the truss (top cord, bottom cord, diagonals, king post), plus a pair of torx head lags every six inches in the top and bottom cord, plus it was a triple, so the same thing on both sides, and yes, the inspector was counting nails.

I'm framing a house right now in Milford, CT. Inspector wants me to hand nail the sheathing with 8d galvanized hand nails at 4" on center within 18" of where the plywood crosses over the band and where the pywood covers the sill plate. absolutely rediculous. He even wrote it on the blueprints when he was reviewing it and initialed it. Never heard of this building code in my life.

When inspectors don't know much they start making up stuff. If he just wants a few more nails I would not complain.

Trusses are a different animal. Nails/ gussets make a truss. Otherwise it is just a bunch of sticks. I count nails on trusses.

I couldn't find any schedule for it, here's a detail I found.

I will tell you how to handle that situation....well, next time LOL. When an inspector comes around and starts marking stuff on the site prints, mind you be careful HOW you ask this, but ask him where in code book it states that. If he states it, then you're SOOL.

But!....I have had some that have come along and said "I want such and such..." and if it's not code then you say something to the effect of "OH....I didn't realize you were a structural engineer. You're not? Wow, how can the city/town take liability for that? That must be some expensive insurance for the city to accept your word as an all knowing structural designer without any credentials."

Who's going to pay you for your time to hand nail sheathing instead of using your gun? I'm sure you priced the job out nailing every single piece of wood on the house with a gun.

What's wit the 8 penny nails in the top plate?? That's a new one to me.

Having done warranty work for 25 years the only nailing issues I ever saw were not enough nails in the sheathing. The sheathing would buckle under the roof shingles, stucco , siding. Sometimes the nails just missed or they were forgotten.

Re: How Many Nails Through King Stud Into Side Of Header

Well, what he's stating there is a concept I had to deal with in WA state. They don't want you to even slightly break the surface of the plywood with a nailhead. So most numb inspectors think you MUST hand nail in order to achieve this. We came up with a few ways to handle it. You can turn the pressure down to tune it in to a decent pressure, but that's only if you've got a good volume of air flowing constantly. Another is a flush tip attached to your gun, or what we did in emergencies is wrap electrical tape around the nose to let it nail closer to the surface.

I got to a point I installed a mini air regulator right on the end of my gun so I could dial it right in without having to go back and forth to the compressor til you tune it in. Most times though the brass fitting would break when you laid the gun down a little too hard.

PITA, but they do ask for these items all along the west coast, almost without fail.

Re: How Many Nails Through King Stud Into Side Of Header

you guys are absolutely right. I didn't include the time to hand nail every single section of wall sheathing around the lower band or second floor band either. and 4" on center for that matter. Plus they MUST be galvanized. why the hell would they need to be galvanized when they are covered with tyvek and vinyl siding?????? Besides the fact that around here, the inspector does his inspections after the house has been framed, roofed, sided, and all the electrical/plumbing/heating rough-ins are done. so he would actually have to take off the vinyl siding to see that i hand nailed it 4" on center. If it comes down to that, i'll definately challenge him with the state building office. we'll see what happens.

The new hitachi guns have a built in flush nail adjustment. I live in the seattle WA area. In the winter i leave the nail heads up 1/8" so by the time they inspect they are usually flush from plywood swelling.

Re: How Many Nails Through King Stud Into Side Of Header

the only reason i would think they'd have to be galv is for the ones going into the green acq or treated lumber mud sill?
my lumber yard only stocks galv nails in coils for my hitachi 83. i yell at them all the time because how often do you really need to use galv sheathing nails? i keep my acq nails in my paslode gun, so i can nail the bottom into the mudsill. i've never had them say anything about puncturing the surface though. it's usually a little ways in. we just turn the air down a bit when going from framing to sheathing.
i see that pic shows 16d nails into the end of the header. i don't think many guys who use guns are going to do this. i have 12d in my guns when framing or 10d rings sometimes.
i put at least that many nails into the kingstud and then angle a bunch up both sides. i don't over do it though, swiss cheese isn't strong.

Re: How Many Nails Through King Stud Into Side Of Header

2X10-12, 3 nails per member per end.
2X6,2 per...per...
Never use 2X10 though.
In my world 8d is for 1X's, and I never saw that many nails in a top plate splice.
Where did the detail come from?
Not critical, just curious?
