How To Lift Headroom At Stair Base?

In a basement stair, there is a head-knocker at the bottom of the run. This is a header that spans to support the stringer of the flight above (stacked L staircases with winder tops).

I want to pull out that header and set it about 8" forward, but then it's not supporting the stringers above it. I've seen another carpenter do this by setting I think about a 4"wide LVL in front of the full header, and then in front of that about 2" rips of 2-by. The ripped LVL was fastened to the header in front of it.

Sort of staircasing up to the full header to provide support for the whole floor. Does that description make sense?

I'm wonder how other folks have approached it. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Could you cut some blocks from 2x10 or 2x12 at the pitch of your stairs sister them together and then fasten them to your header? maybe three sets of 2?

I just did this the other day. I cut the joists back 11-1/4" reinstalled the header then layed a 2x12 flat where the header used to be. You don't say how wide of a span you have,I don't know if this would be strong enough for you, if not you could cut some 2x12 blocks at an angle as MR.D mentioned like a little knee brace. It would give you something to nail rock to also.

Thanks for the pics. That's different from what I thought. I just filled the whole darn thing up with wood.

Essentially something like this, with the idea being to catch the thrust off the stringers above, and to transfer both lateral and load forces to the header and then to the other joists? (I threw in the center blocking support the floor boards and for a sheetrock nailer.)

I'm not exactly seeing what your trying to get at but I've headered on top of the joist and incorporated it into the stair set. Bear on the joist instead of hanging, screw the subfloor up into the header. Maybe a few flatblocks when you clear headroom.
