Heel Height Anyone?

im using scissor trusses for the first time and am trying figure out what the heel height is before i get em,so i can do my calculations for my rake wall(due to many windows)span is 44',pitch is 5/12,and 8' walls.
generally are all scissor trusses made the same with the same heel hieght or are they different from each manafacture?
thanks

Re: Heel Height Anyone?

heel height will vary with pitch given the same chord section.

I posted this on your other thread

Sorry..just can't resist it guys.

They make my calves sore, so I stay with flat, but I do enjoy 4" on a woman with nice butt and legs.

Re: Heel Height Anyone?

There is no generic answer to this.

It is going to depend on the truss manufacturer, your insulation requirements, what your outside pitch and inside pitch is, etc., etc.

There are scissor trusses made with what I call no heel (just the rake chord hanging over the wall), and raised heels to allow for insulation and vent space.

With scissor trusses you will want a raised heel, otherwise you will basically have no insulation near the wall if you leave vent space.

Re: Heel Height Anyone?

The best way, if possible, is to make the tail heights all the same, so that gutter heights match, regardless of the O.H. In that case, heel heights will vary according to the OH.

Maybe (I don't know why not) you can get
the fabricator or the designer to e-mail
drawings?

Re: Heel Height Anyone?

As noted above, just call the truss company. I'm sure they'd be more than glad to help out, & would fully understand your needs. I've done it a couple of times, many, many years ago.

Re: Heel Height Anyone?

In general yes, there's a way to find out. If you pretend the width of the board is your "run" your hypotenuse will be your heel height. You then add 1/4" and you have your heel height. For example, if you have a 2x4 top chord at an 8/12 pitch, your heel height will be 4-7/16"

This is just a generic method used in most truss companies, but not necessarily yours. You could have raised heel trusses or a number of other factors. Call your truss guy and ask him, he'll tell you.

If the bottom part of the scissor truss is 5/12 and the inside of the truss starts flush to the inside of the wall, then you don't need to know the heel height if your going tom frame the gable end to go underneath the truss. You do the math from the inside of the wall coming in 12" and 5" of rise.

I just drew a lame excuse for a scissor truss for an example.

Re: Heel Height Anyone?

k.since you are thinking of using 7" superinsulated walls and asked about heel hgt. (for 1 of 2 reasons.)1 to fig. your drop to build your rack while wall is down.2 an energy heel would allow you to continue your super-insulation.And..joe is right bout the rake wall. Looking back,it seems like this has yet to be designed, and i have more questions than answers.7" of plate, sheathig size?vault meets wall at inside plate.
