Getting Paid After A Job

I have a job which i finished this week. Durring the course of work more work was required to complete the job correctly. I was asked to do the work, and did so.
The way I see it the estimate was given in good faith. The original estiamte was for replacement windows but the price i was given by menards for those windows were for stock sizes. when i went to order the matI found that I was given a the wrong prices for the windows. Immediatly I called the homewoner . and told him of the pricing mistake. He told me to find the cheapest wood finish windows. I did and they were new construction pella double hung. I explain this to the customer and he give the verbal ok on the work. Now he wants to know why hes being charged for additional framing.

i thought id ask you guys and see what you all think. If a job ends up needing more work do you not charge for it, or do you stick with you original estimate price?
Thanks for any feedback.

There should be a standard reply to these type of posts.

1. Do you have a written and properly executed contract?
2. What does your written and properly executed contract say?
3. Do what it says.
3. No written or properly executed contract, or no written change order,
then good luck. Move on and learn from your mistakes.

I do the work for the price I quoted, period.

It sounds like you neglected to tell him there would be additional work involved when using new construction windows rather than replacement, and there would be an extra charge for that work. If that's the case, it's a tough lesson we all learn sooner or later, but the ethical thing to do is eat it.

When that happens I tell me customers it will start at $10,000.00. I than take the amount of time their wife, or mother can last in the bedroom & deduct that from the $10,000.00, you than have your price to do the extra work.

Come on man, seriously..do what is in your contract, and if you don't have a contract, shame on ya.

You should complete your project for the contracted price at least that is how I would handle it. Whether the new windows would be stock or special order is something you should of made sure of before you signed a contract. I feel your mistake was dealing with a supplier that will hire anybody with a heartbeat to sale their wares. I definatelly would not let the responsibility of whether my company shows a profit or a loss at the hands of a chain store.

Estimates are what you get from garages and insurance companies!!! We give bids and specify what we are going to do for our money and what we are going to supply to get it done, if something comes into play that we were to stupid to see, we eat it and learn on the next one!!!

Re: Getting Paid After A Job

1st Problem---- You went to Retards for windows!
Solution --- Find a qualified window company or lumberyard to price windows.

2nd Problem ---- Customer tells you to find the cheapest wood finish window available.
Solution --- Give customer options of various window line pricing before ordering them. Explain the differences between different window lines so he knows what he is getting.

3rd Problem ---- You submitted an estimate, got a verbal OK and proceed with the work.
Solution ---- Provide a detailed Quote (not a guesstimate), have customer sign and then do the work. Negotiate extras before performance.

Most contractors don't make the price transparent in a way that the customer could make an informed decision. If you are using the big box retailers for supplies, you would be better off focusing on the labor and allowing the customer to purchase their own materials.

Because your supplier screwed up or you did, the client should pay for your mistake?

I bet if they screwed up and quoted you less money when you went to buy them, you would have had no problem keeping the money.

What does your contract say?

It sounds like you gave the guy a bid and you both agreed to the terms, yet you later changed the terms because either your supplier screwed up or you did.
