Getting The First Floor Perfectly Level...

All framers know the importance of getting the first floor really level after capping since a 1/4 inch problem on the first floor could become a 2 inch difference come roof. I've always used a transit to find the highest point as a reference and get every corner to that highest point. I've seen guys level the first floor with as much success without the transit. Any of you guys have better mothods than me or things that i should try since using the transit is the only method I've every been taught and used

Re: Getting The First Floor Perfectly Level...

This is not exactly on topic but close and also funny.

When my Dad was building his house in 1955 he did a lot of the work himself. After the excavator dug the hole and footers Dad put forms in the footers leveled and screeded off. When the block layers showed up they were amazed by such a level flat footer. They remarked that they never laid block on a level footer before.

After all block was laid and the block layers had gone my Dad started on the cap and framing. He was amazed that he had to build up one corner by over 2" to get the floorl level.

I guess it is necessary to start out UN-level to end up Level????

Have a good day getting it level.

Les

Re: Getting The First Floor Perfectly Level...

Can't tell where this thread is heading, but I use the transit for location and the laser for level. I can set all my grade pins with no help and check them as needed. I have heard pro and con on lasers, but I'm sold on them and their accuracy is great.

Kind of a past way of doing it was the water level...funny thing is I see them for sale again. The first slab I helped pour was set with a water level...and I remember watching a block layer use one...I have no idea why he wasn't using a string line.

my mason is pretty much right on, all the way around, so we just frame the floor right on that and right on up. never had any issues with anything being way off later on.

Re: Getting The First Floor Perfectly Level...

Since still being wet behind the ears it was just yesterday (last year) that I learned to level the first floor with a builders level. Find the highest corner and make the others equal. Pretty simple.
