Garage Roof

I've got to put a cut roof on a friends garage and wonder what size cieling joists and rafters you might use.

The garage is 30' X 20' and is to have a straight hipped roof. There is a beam centrally lengthways so max joist span is 10'. Pitch is around 35 deg and it will have a clay tile roof. I figure to run purlins at mid span of the rafters and strut down to the central beam. The rafters need to be at 16" centres.
From other roofs i've done I reckon 6x2 joists and rafters will do it but would be interested in what you guys think.
Thanks, Nick

Re: Garage Roof

To be right up front, I have never made a roof like this yet. But that said, I was thinking along the same lines - 2x6 rafters and joists, and 2x4 struts. Instead of purlins, I was thinking of 2x4 ridge posts.

I assume theres a post in the middle of the garage, between the two car bays. Or is it three car bays? What's the layout of a 20 by 30 garage?

Only reason the joists need to be 2x6 is because people put stuff up there in the pseudo "attic" and kids climb up there. Otherwise it's a tension member only, not a beam, and could even be a cable.

Re: Garage Roof

man always check a span chart. There is one online and you just punch in what you are doing, figure worst case if your not paying for materials(snow/tile) and go at it. Its something like national lumber ass. or something.
