Framing Stairs

I wanted to ask a question regarding framing stairs that your going to use carpet on. My new framers placed a gap of 1 1/2" on each side of the treads and risers going up the stairs. I am used to no gap or 1/2" at most to allow for sheet rock. I am afraid the the carpet will not have anything to attach to on the ends. My carpet guy who owns his own store and a veteran of carpet says that I will have problems with the gap. He suggests putting down 1/4" OSB of the steps to go to the edge with. What is your guys method and do you feel that 1" after sheetrock is an issue.

thanks for your responses

Re: Framing Stairs

Why not just fur out the wall with a couple sheets osb? Voila - back to 1/2 ". Even knocking it down to just a 1" gap with 1 sheet osb will allow trim to cover up the gap.

Re: Framing Stairs

What'd they do, slip a 2x between the stringer and the wall? I only put a 1x (3/4") in there and we use 5/8" drywall. Even if they used a 2x, they could have ran the plywood treads and risers alittle closer to the wall and not have left such a big gap.

Re: Framing Stairs

I've done it this way for years. The reason why is because there is usually a skirt board that runs up the stairs that you tuck in there rather than cutting each step and riser. That'll leave you 1/4" gap left.

If you have no skirt board then yes, just a 1x4 is what I usually is put in.

I've done the 2x4 and had carpet going into the face of sheetrock and haven't heard anything about it, but it is quite a gap. Probably isn't feasible to replace the treads is it?

Re: Framing Stairs

I've not been using a skirt board, but on this one I will. Thanks for the input guys. The skirt board will look good and will probably get me to change my ways of trimming steps out.

Thanks
