Re: Framing Small Gable Dormers
'Tis pretty straight-forward except the side walls are sloped.

Re: Framing Small Gable Dormers
Here's an interesting technique described in a JLC article:
http://www.jlconline.com/cgi-bin/jlc.../View/9004fram (I think you've got to pay 3 bucks if you're not subscribed) Basically, they take one of the valley rafters created by adding the gable dormer, and extend that from the outside wall top plate all the way up to the ridge. Any common rafter that intersects it gets cut and spliced back into it. I don't know what I think about it. Somehow I think it's not structurally sound, even if it worked for the author. Maybe might_anvil and some others can comment on that. I feel like that technique basically destroys the deflection resistance of the common rafters that it cuts. For more conventional ideas, try the book Attics, Dormers, and Skylights by Taunton Press: http://www.taunton.com/store/pages/070834_tcpg.asp |
