Framing Over Veranda
This might be a stupid question, but I'm bored and chewing over ideas for a cabin this summer. lets say I wanted to build a shed roof out over a deck that extended out from a building 8 feet. On the existing cabin the pitch will be 4/12, 2x6 rafters birdsmouthed and I want to put a beam out on the edge of the deck the same height as the wall of the cabin. how do u figure out the pitch or angles for doing the shed roof? I want to birdsmouth the rafters where they land on the beam and have a seat cut where they meet the existing roof.

Re: Framing Over Veranda
all depends on where the shed rafters are to meet the main roof. for example if they were to meet the existing roof eight feet from the existing exterior wall that would be 32 inches in total rise but because they begin eight feet away from the exterior wall at the veranda edge they would have only a 2 on 12 rise. which is pretty darn flat. which would look pretty darn ugly mike.

Re: Framing Over Veranda![]() If your main roof is a 4:12...the shed will need to be less...this example is a 2:12 shed. Now, I'm not a roof expert...but I believe that a 2:12 can not be shingled. Water might run up the slope in a strong wind and penetrate the shingles. Acad...its the cleanest for my needs. |

Re: Framing Over Veranda
hmm, thanks for the diagrams, it clears some things up, any suggestions? steeper pitch? drop the beam a foot or something? the cabin is only going to be 16 feet wide and the roof doesnt really have to look that pretty
