Re: Framing Into Concrete Ceiling
Any true hammer drill that takes SDS-Max bits will blow through those holes in a few seconds each. Like someone said, you need a REAL hammer drill to deal with old concrete. Anything by Bosch, Hilti or Milwaukee will do it. Make sure it's SDS-Max though...

Re: Framing Into Concrete Ceiling
What you describe I know as "span decks" or "cellular concrete decks". They are maybe 4 or 5 inches thick, but have hollows like block. They were big factory fabricated slabs that got craned into place. An inch and a quarter until you hit the hollow sounds about right, in my experience with those.

Re: Framing Into Concrete Ceiling![]() That type spins fast and makes a lot of noise...not much good IMHO - unless you like noise and little to no progress. Here are the specs from Hilti: http://www.us.hilti.com/holus/module...ANGE_OID=11587 Quote:

Re: Framing Into Concrete Ceiling
You *COULD* rent a hammer drill for far less than the purchase price.
If you have no real need to spend a few hundred dollars - rent it. Will this be a tool that always sees the light of day...or will be back in the box for a few years before it's needed again?

Re: Framing Into Concrete Ceiling
Thanks for the rotary hammer drill tips guys. What a difference the lower rotary RPM plus high hammer action made. Using the correct tool for the job... what a concept, right?
I paid $255.00 for the Bosch 11255VSR 1" SDS-plus rotary hammer drill + $10 for the 5/32" bit at Home Depot. (Lowes sells this same model for $339.00). This drill practically dove into the hardened concrete. I drilled two pilot holes in less than one minute. Your suggestions saved my project. Thanks a million! ![]() here's a picture of the drill I used: altruisticbeings dot com/images/1.jpg and the successful joist installed: altruisticbeings dot com/images/2.jpg altruisticbeings dot com/images/3.jpg |

Re: Framing Into Concrete Ceiling
Celtic - let me know where to send the pie. email me at barrywjrobb (at) gmail.com with your address. are you a fan of tarts? one of the best desserts I have ever eaten is served up by a local French owned and operated restaurant called Le Coq Au Vin here in Orlando. Chef Perrotte has created, hands down, the best restaurant in all of orlando... frequently voted as one of the best restaurants by the locals here. anyway, they make the best rhubarb tart I've ever tasted. lecoqauvinrestaurant dot com has their full menu. I will find out if they can drop ship to you.

Re: Framing Into Concrete Ceiling
I often get a hankering for shoofly pie. I'm not sure they travel well by e-mail, however.

Re: Framing Into Concrete Ceiling
LMAO
My wife is Sicilian...pasta's and sauces ~ no problem. What could she possibly know about shoofly? I mean really....her parents came here on a boat...they don't have shoofly in the "old country", right? Well, my Dad LOVES shoofly pie....I have no idea how or why? He's from Brooklyn...LOL. My wife took it upon herself to make him a shoofly for his b-day one year ....that was about 10 years ago...and every year since my dad asks me (on the sly and on the side because he isn't supposed to eat that now) 'Is the Mrs. going to make a pie?' ...and every year she does ~ bit he only gets a small piece as Mom has the eyes of an eagle...when she's awake...then Dad goes ape-sheet on the pie. LMAO I gotta give my parent's a call .....I think we all should (or your kids).

Re: Framing Into Concrete Ceiling
sounds like you got your problem solved. If your not finnisd yet id squirt some good subfloor glue on the 2xs just for xtra insurance. Ive ripped lumber apart before that stuff would turn loose from concrete.
