Framers

I don't think there's a group of people who have more in common that are so cantankerous with each other than framers. We pick each other apart like lions at a water buffalo feed. I catch myself doing it too. Sometimes, it's justified. Real idiots out there.

I think most here are more than qualified to frame and "do it right" and we all have our methods. None are right, none are wrong. Just different.

Just my observation of the day.

Re: Framers

Different strokes for different fokes. I've learned to frame so I'm comfortable and the work gets done on time. We can debate until the end of time on which way is "better" but in the end we all come to the same product. I do like to see how other framers approach certain obstacles though, I've learned to absorb from others as much as I can. Thats just me though.

i think that all trades are a lil bias toward each others work , quick to correct , or point out something thats not kosher with them .come across alot of that . most contractors think there better then the rest , just to satisfy there ego.
do work to the specs and codes regardless where u are and no one can bitch

WTF is a "general house builder"

I never heard of that, but I've only been around this industry for about 20 years or more.

It means he's a homeowner posing as a GC.

Re: Framers

One downfall of being a frammer is that you will always be underpaid. Other subs seem to make quite a bit more most of the time, but damn, it's worth not making as much to get to do this job!

HAHA Nice one...
I have seen some real pieces of work out there..... No matter who it is it's hard work. Everyone has thier own knack at doing things and sometimes we learn from each others accomplishments and mistakes.

Re: Framers

There IS a right way and a WRONG way to framing. The right way is following the specs and codes implamented by the inspectors and engineers. The most aggrivating thing to me as a Project Manager was hearing those Good Old Boy, No It Alls say "I've been framing for 25 years and have never done it like that." They're egos are way to big to ever listen to someone younger then them. Just because you were not obligated to do something 25 years ago, it doesn't mean you don't have to do it today. The codes change all the time and a Good Framer is always aware of these changes and if they're not, they are always willing to learn these changes when someone makes them aware.

I've owned my own company now for a little more then a year and I am no stranger to the county building code offices. I make regular monthly visits to keep myself up to date on any new changes. This also gives me the oppertunity to mingle with the inspectors which in turn makes my life easier come inspection time. It's a great feeling when you pass inspections on the first try. Knowledge combined with a little butt kissing goes a long way.

Re: Framers

Well Dretos Project manager I think you should read Framerman's post again IMHO he's not talking about code bit methods.Every Craftsman leans as an Apprentice that there are at least 3 different methods of doing a job al just as good as each other.
As a Craftsman your knowledge tells you which method is suited best to the job of work in hand and no man is ever to old to learn a new way.As for hanging around with Inspectors I think you should know there is a difference between being polite and being servile. When talking to men take that chip of your shoulder just because guys are older than you. As a manager you should know you've got to give respect to get respect so earn it.Nice to know you've owned your own firm for over a year now,I wish you a happy and prosperous futture.

Re: Framers

Well billy d craftsman, maybe you should read my post again. The people I'm speaking of is the ones that are not willing to learn new ways of doing things and refuse to hear any-ones directives but their own. Also, I learned the trade from people older then me and completely appreciate what they've taught me. There's no chip on my shoulder, I have respect for everyone (regardless of age) until I'm given a reason not to.

The last thing I need is moral and business advice from someone who can't complete a grammatically correct sentence. I may have only been in business for myself for a year, but, I've managed a multi-million dollar outfit for many years before that. Thanks for the prosperous wishing.
