Faming Roof For Metal Roofing.

Hello I am new to the forum and couldnt find the answer I was looking for in the discussions.

I am building a pole barn 70' long by 28' wide the home owner wanted a standard roof with shingles. Until the other day when they changed the plan to wanting an aluminum/ metal roof. I've never dealt with framing a roof for an aluminum roof and I've read a few things that say you need and osb underlayment and some say you don't you just have to nail 2x4 or 1x4 to the top of the rafters going the length of the building to screw the aluminum roof to. Was wonder what is the proper way to frame the roof for an aluminum roof?

If it matters any I am building this in southern Ohio where it gets some snow but not a lot. Thank you for the help.

Find the product they want and check the directions. My neighbors had a stone coated aluminum shingle roof put on a few months ago. It was installed over another layer of shingles with a hi temp undelayment underneath.

So I would guess an osb deck. (Strictly a guess)

Ditto on the 'find the product directions'. Consider contacting the manufacturer, easy to do lots of times in this instant information web most of us can access.

Also, if there's a building department see if they have any handouts on their requirements/regulations, they can be a wealth of information as well as a PITA.

Personally I feel you end up with a better and longer lasting job with a solid deck. Believe it will hold up better to like hail storms. With the cost of 2x material OSB is not much more.

On a pole barn, standard practice around here is to just use perlins instead of sheeting.

Screwed to the perlins is typically how I see new construction pole-barns around here.

Most if not all building departments don't allow the practice of metal over shingles. Paper or not. My area for sure. South Florida Building Code.
All roofs here are stripped and nailed to current code with 2-3/4 ring shank nails.

2-3/4? All we use are 2-3/8 for sheeting.

I agree about stripping the roof first when installing metal on a reroof. Our metal place sells a composite product that you can use as a perlin over shingles, I've never seen it used though. If a homeowner is too cheap to have it done properly I'm not interested. Why put a lifetime product like metal down on top of old shingles? Stripping a roof and replacing any water damaged sheeting and laying down new paper just makes sense.

For that type of build I would screw into the purlins, if for some reason you use sheathing use plywood and not osb. The screws will work loose with osb overtime and the metal will potentially leak.

Using the larger 5/16th headed screws make a big differences too in staying tight.
