Densglass As Residential Sheathing

Im just wondering what are the advantages if any in using denseglass for residential sheathing instead of OSB or plywood.

Also they say its structural but my shoulder has told me differently everytime i carry it on my shoulder.

sheathing for structural purposes is really for shear values. We used this stuff once called ThermoPly. You want to talk about being skeptical! You can carry 30-40 sheets at a time. Once it gets nailed properly, it works the way it's supposed to.

DensGlas is good for apartments and commercial that needs fire code requirements. When I lived in WA state, we did many apt. buildings using what we called gyp board, which was essentially sheetrock without the tapered edges. Some of those buildings were 3 stories high.

It's perfectly fine, but make absolutely sure you don't break that surface. That's where your strength disappears when you drive those nails too deep. We used roofing nails to hold our on. Not sure if that's code though.

Re: Densglass As Residential Sheathing

I dunno i think its a little sketchby to be called structural. I think that if that is used in residential there should be diagonal bracing in the walls. I have seen a house "house of cards with that stuff on it. It was nailed properly with roofing nails, strong wind came and the denseglass just tore right around th nails.

I also dont like how itchy it makes you. And i curse the guy who invented it.

we just used it behind our weatherboard shingles to create a 1 hour wall for thew fire marshall on a house. I also would like to know if it can be used as sheeting for a shear wall.
